The Anglo mine BHP craves explains why a deal boom is coming
Investors expect the growing demand for copper and the surging costs of building new mines will spark a frenzy of big mining deals, regardless of how BHP’s bid for Anglo American plays out.
There was a Monty Python-esque moment as Resources Minister Madeleine King and West Australian Premier Roger Cook took potshots at BHP over the possibility the miner will close or sell its Nickel West operation.
Never mind the fact that BHP is one of the biggest taxpayers in the country, and one of the biggest royalty payers in WA, and at least partly responsible for the budget surpluses both Labor governments recently produced. To mangle that famous line from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, this was a case of “but what have they done for us lately”.
