Multi-agent Systems
Multi-agent Systems2017 •
Multi-agent system (MAS) is an expanding field in science and engineering. It merges classical fields like game theory with modern ones like machine learning and computer science. This book provides a succinct introduction to the subject, covering the theoretical fundamentals as well as the latter developments in a coherent and clear manner. The book is centred on practical applications rather than introductory topics. Although it occasionally makes reference to the concepts involved, it will do so primarily to clarify real-world applications. The inner chapters cover a wide spectrum of issues related to MAS uses, which include collision avoidance, automotive applications, evacuation simulation, emergence analyses, cooperative control, context awareness, data (image) mining, resilience enhancement and the management of a single-user multi-robot.

The present thesis reports on the acquisition of tense-aspect morphology in three LI Italian children learning L2 English and three LI English children learning L2 Italian. The children, aged between seven and nine years, were observed in their home environment for a period of six months at approximately two-week intervals. The tense-aspect forms considered are the simple past and the progressive for English, the passato prossimo (i.e. present perfect) and the imperfetto (i.e. imperfect) for Italian. A typological analysis of these forms indicates that their interaction with lexical aspectual classes creates prototypical links. Thus, the simple past and the passato prossimo are prototypically linked to telic predicates, the progressive is prototypically linked to activities and imperfetto to statives. These prototypical links are substantiated acquisitionally by LI and L2 studies. They are also confirmed by findings from the present study, indicating that these prototypical links ar...

Archival tumor samples represent a potential rich resource of annotated specimens for translational genomics research. However, standard variant calling approaches require a matched normal sample from the same individual, which is often not available in the retrospective setting, making it difficult to distinguish between true somatic variants and germline variants that are private to the individual. Archival sections often contain adjacent normal tissue, but this normal tissue can include infiltrating tumor cells. Comparative somatic variant callers are designed to exclude variants present in the normal sample, so a novel approach is required to leverage sequencing of adjacent normal tissue for somatic variant calling. Here we present LumosVar 2.0, a software package designed to jointly analyze multiple samples from the same patient. The approach is based on the concept that the allelic fraction of somatic variants, but not germline variants, would be reduced in samples with low tu...

Multilayer packaging: Advances in preparation techniques and emerging food applications2020 •
In recent years, with advantages of versatility, functionality, and convenience, multilayer food packaging has gained significant interest. As a single entity, multilayer packaging combines the benefits of each monolayer in terms of enhanced barrier properties, mechanical integrity, and functional properties. Of late, apart from conventional approaches such as coextrusion and lamination, concepts of nanotechnology have been used in the preparation of composite multilayer films with improved physical, chemical, and functional characteristics. Further, emerging techniques such as ultraviolet and cold plasma treatments have been used in manufacturing films with enhanced performance through surface modifications. This work provides an up‐to‐date review on advancements in the preparation of multilayer films for food packaging applications. This includes critical considerations in design, risk of interaction between the package and the food, mathematical modeling and simulation, potential...
