Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) uses the visual features of an image such as color, shape and texture to represent and index the image. In a typical content based image retrieval system, a set of images that exhibit visual features similar to that of the query image are returned in response to a query. CLUE (CLUster based image rEtrieval) is a popular CBIR technique that retrieves images by clustering. In this paper, we propose a CBIR system that also retrieves images by clustering just like CLUE. But, the proposed system combines all the features (shape, color, and texture) with a threshold for the purpose. The combination of all the features provides a robust feature set for image retrieval. This paper is an Editorial for the Special Issue titled “OpenStreetMap as a multidisciplinary nexus: perspectives, practices and procedures”. The Special Issue is largely based on the talks presented in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the Academic Track at the State of the Map conferences. As such, it represents the most pressing and relevant issues and topics considered by the academic community in relation to OpenStreetMap (OSM)—a global project and community aimed to create and maintain a free and editable database and map of the world. In this Editorial, we survey the papers included in the Special Issue, grouping them into three research perspectives: applications of OSM for studies within other disciplines, OSM data quality, and dynamics in OSM. This survey reveals that these perspectives, while being distinct, are also interrelated. This calls for the formalization of an ‘OSM science’ that will provide the conceptual grounds to advance the scientific study of OSM, not as a set of individualized efforts but as a unified approach.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to introduce the special issue and outline its major themes and challenges, their relevance and the research opportunities the field presents. Design/methodology/approach – The article reviews prior literature and outline's the need to view public procurement as a policy tool to introduce the contributions to this special issue. Findings: Public procurement has been consistently used to further public policies in a wide range of fields. The collection of articles in this special issue contributes to a broader understanding of the role and potential of public procurement in delivering desired policy outcomes in society. The articles show that public procurement largely has strategic aspirations, and its potential to deliver on wider societal issues is attractive to policy makers. The issues raised in this collection of articles however also demonstrate that public procurement often lacks strategic maturity and critical issues, notably around how to demonstrate and evaluate its impact and 'success'. Research limitations/implications – This article aims to stimulate interdisciplinary research into the role of public procurement as a policy tool and its ability to achieve public value. Originality/value – This article discusses theoretical and empirical findings that highlight the importance of public procurement for achieving public value. The special issue examines the interdisciplinary literature on public procurement and shows how it is being used to achieve public value.

Figures of mobility, from nomads to flâneurs and tourists, have been used to describe both self and other in the social sciences and humanities for a long time. They act as a conceptual shorthand in contemporary scholarly debates, allowing social theorists to relate broad-scale phenomena to the human condition. This repeated usage highlights how these figures have become 'keywords', in the sense given by Raymond Williams, which typify much of the vocabulary constituting the study of human mobility today. In this general introduction, I lay out the overall conceptual framework behind the various contributions to this special issue.

We reintroduce a wide-angle view of reading comprehension, the Reading Systems Framework, which places word knowledge in the center of the picture, taking into account the progress made in comprehension research and theory. Within this framework, word-to-text integration processes can serve as a model for the study of local comprehension processes, that is, those that make sense out of short stretches of text. These processes require linkage between the word identification system and the comprehension system, with the lexicon in the linking role. Studies of these processes examine the influence of one sentence on the reading of a single word in a second sentence, which enables the integration of the word meaning into the reader's mental model of the text. Skilled comprehenders, more than less skilled, show immediate use of word meanings in the integration process. Other evidence is also consistent with the assumption that word meaning processes are causal components in comprehension skill.

The place of technology in teaching and learning is established. However, there is the need to consider motivational variables in the use of technology as relating to language learning. This paper thus explored the Malaysian students’ experience and motivation using web-based activities in learning English vocabulary. Questionnaire was administered on the selected sample of the pupils and the data were analyzed using simple percentage. Finding revealed that the students had adequate experience using technology and felt motivated using web-based activities in learning vocabulary. These findings show that Malaysian’s status in terms of using technology to solve classroom problem. It was this concluded that the use of technology related activities and applications should be encouraged.

Aquatic plants fulfil a wide range of ecological roles, and make a substantial contribution to the structure, function and service provision of aquatic ecosystems. Given their well-documented importance in aquatic ecosystems, research into aquatic plants continues to blossom. The 14th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants, held in Edinburgh in September 2015, brought together 120 delegates from 28 countries and six continents. This special issue of Hydrobiologia includes a select number of papers on aspects of aquatic plants, covering a wide range of species, systems and issues. In this paper, we present an overview of current trends and future directions in aquatic plant research in the early twenty first century. Our understanding of aquatic plant biology, the range of scientific issues being addressed and the range of techniques available to researchers have all arguably never been greater; however, substantial challenges exist to the conservation and management of both aquatic plants and the ecosystems in which they are found. The range of countries and continents represented by conference delegates and authors of papers in the special issue illustrates the global relevance of aquatic plant research in the early twenty first century but also the many challenges that this burgeoning scientific discipline must address.

In view of the current global context, which challenges are facing science- and technology-based developments and cooperation in a way to contribute for policies that stimulate localized learning, innovation and endogenous development in Latin America?

This broad question has motivated the work behind the Special Issue introduced by this paper, which considers the development of case studies in selected Latin America regions. The analysis lead us to argue that value-based networks have the potential to make both public policies and markets more effective, promoting learning trajectories for the inclusive development of regions. But they require effective public investments to keep attracting and qualifying human resources, together with long-term developments towards technical industries and export capacity for emerging markets worldwide. Our analysis argues about the unique potential for further developing Latin America through strategic international, knowledge-based ventures, exploring the emerging role the internationalization of universities and scientific institutions may play at a global level. Above all, they require the systematic observation of science and technical change in international comparison, as well as a relational infrastructure for collective action, at an international level, in a context much influenced by a dynamic of change and a necessary balance between the creation and diffusion of knowledge towards the endogenous development of all parts involved. The role of Latin America Universities and science policies based on international cooperation are considered to be particularly important in this process.

Recent research have found out that Bio Electrochemical Systems (BES) are proving to be efficient in both power generation and in waste disposal. The best example for a BES is a microbial fuel cell. The microbial fuel cell (MFC) uses the organic and the inorganic materials in the wastewater to produce electricity by the action of the microbes on them. Thus the MFC’s can be used for both bio-electricity generation and wastewater treatment. The power generation and the efficiency of the MFC depends on various factors like the type of bacteria, type of electrode used and organic content in the effluent. Experiments were carried out to treat textile industry wastewater using Microbial Fuel Cell. Graphite was used as anode, stainless steel and aluminium mesh were used as cathode. Influence of cathodes on power production and COD reduction on process has been critically examined. Islamic tradition promotes a holistic approach of personality development in which, we argue, three educational concepts take the centre stage: tarbiyah, ta’leem and ta’deeb. Looking through the lens of these concepts, we analyse two Islamic religious education (IRE) curricula: the 2001 and 2012 curricula for Flemish public secondary education provided by the Representative Body for IRE. We conduct a systematic thematic document analysis of the 2001 and 2012 curricula to map curricula elements that potentially contribute to Islamic personality development through IRE classes. Crucially, this article seeks to investigate whether the 2001 and 2012 curricula for Flemish public secondary education are in line with these central IRE concepts. We observe that the 2012 curriculum does contain relevant anchor points to work on tarbiyah, ta’leem and ta’deeb and to strengthen an Islamic personality in Muslim pupils. La intención de este título, así como tema para el presente monográfico, fue desde un principio la de ofrecer las páginas de este número 40 de Boletín de Arte para un doble encuentro. De entrada, aquel entre los animales y la historia del arte, como es enunciado de una forma literal y explícita por esas mismas palabras. Y a su vez, para otro adicional, en torno a las posibilidades que se abren sobre cómo entender y articular las relaciones entre ambas esferas. Encuentro que se suma a y matiza el anterior, y que es apuntado de un modo más indirecto.
Porque no se trataría, o más bien no sólo, de abordar a los animales tal y como aparecen contenidos y reflejados en la sucesión de obras que encarnan la historia del arte en el imaginario colectivo. Fórmula, ésta, con la que se suele unir ambos conceptos: animales en la historia del arte. Aquí la preposición "en" ha perdido una "n" y por el camino se ha transformado en conjunción. Para colocar esas dos nociones una junto a otra, e invitar así a una reflexión acerca de lo que implican estas posiciones relativas. Para promover un encuentro entre la amplia variedad de acercamientos que la historia del arte pone en práctica con respecto a los animales. Ya sea de manera más transversal o concreta; mediante metodologías asentadas y con una larga tradición en la disciplina -como la iconografía o la emblemática- u otras de desarrollo más reciente -como los estudios animales o humano-animales; atendiendo a su representación y simbología, o a su presencia, percepciones y agencias. O a combinaciones de lo anterior, en diversos grados y medidas.
