Sling

The single interrupted sling suturing technique is the technique of choice when the goal of therapy is to reposition one of the surgical flaps at a particular occlusal apical level that is independent of the other gingival tissue height.
As an anchor type suture, the surgical flaps could be elevated, and positioned by the support of the adjacent tooth or implant.(e.g. healing abutment) The clinicians should notice the collapse of the soft tissue due to the incision procedures. (post-treatment) Tension release is indicated in this suturing to approach the final position of the gingiva contour that the clinicians expect.

Appunti di studio delle evidenze artistico-rupestri cinesi relazionabili alla storia ed alle iconografie del Wushu.

Questa raccolta di appunti è inerente allo studio delle evidenze rupestri dei siti della Cina che possono essere messe in relazione con la storia antica del 武术Wushu – arti marziali, in particolare con alcune iconografie e pratiche associabili alle arti marziali cinesi, alla storia ed alla cultura del Wushu.
Dopo acluni appunti focalizzati sullo studio delle nozioni, della terminologia e degli aspetti fondamentali del Wushu, il focus della ricerca verte sull'analisi dei principali aspetti e della bibliografia dedicata alla sconfinata materia di ricerca quale l’arte rupestre cinese, dove per “cinese” s'intende un vasto sistema ecologico-culturale caratterizzato da open e globular clusters  di nicchie culturali ed ambientali diffuso nei territori coincidenti e limitrofi alle regioni ed alle provincie della Cina attuale, che sono anche il criterio di organizzazione del materiale di studio presentato come excursus dei maggiori siti di arte rupestre soffermandosi sulle raffigurazioni che posso essere ritenute pertinenti all'ambito dell’analisi storica del Wushu.
A queste evidenze è talvolta associata un’ulteriore documentazione ed in alcuni casi l’approfondimento di peculiari aspetti di manufatti e cultura materiale proveniente dagli scavi archeologici.
Altra peculiarità ivi annottata e presentata è l’analisi nelle sue pertinenze al Wushu della tradizione manoscritta 东巴Dongba propria della minoranza etnica 纳西Naxi (regione di 丽江Lijiang, provincia dello 云南Yunnan) interpretata come ramo espressivo di un filone della pittografia direttamente relazionabile con l’arte rupestre.
Nelle conclusioni si tenta di sketchare un quadro riassuntivo di quanto sembra possibile evincere dalle fonti analizzate.

The thesis aims to put the draft into the practice for further substantial research into the sling missiles in the Near East which has been made in the prior bachelor thesis. The presented work will try to establish a first morphological means for the identification of sling projectiles in the archaeological record in the Near East. The main goal is to concentrate on the metric data and the functional design of projectiles in order to establish parameters which are characteristic only for sling projectiles. The necessary size, weight and form parameters, however, cannot at present be deduced from archaeological artefacts proper, because the identification of "rounded handy-sized objects of clay or stone RHO" (Kubíková 2013, 17) as sling projectiles is disputed and very different functions for the plain and ball-like items are proposed (cooking stones, tokens etc.). The central idea is to get to valid parameters after studying sling projectiles in a secure context, where their identification is unambiguous, namely in their use by recent-ethnographic societies. Studying the attributes of slingstones from the ethnographic contexts from Oceania and Americas, it is hoped that realistic size and shape ranges can be defined which could serve as a supporting tool when designating and interpreting small finds of stone or clay in the Neolithic Near East. The range margins, it is thought, in the first step, will permit to subtract from the archaeological record all RHO items that fall out of the size, weight and form range of ethnographically attested sling missiles. As a testing case, the ethnographically derived parameters will be applied to various kinds of plain clay balls that were found at the Late Neolithic site Tell Arbid Abyad (MU-ARBA Project, NE-Syria, 2007–2010). Beyond that much of the available archaeological information and photographs of slingstones, sling balls and sling projectiles are brought together to spur an archaeological comparison and which could help archaeologists with a correct identification of small artefacts.

Lead sling bullets are often inscribed with the personal names of military commanders of a unit of slingers. Archaeological sites that have yielded such projectiles provide an opportunity to link the names attested with historical figures known from literary sources. A classic example presents the city of Olynthus that was besieged and taken through treachery by the troops of Philip II of Macedon in 348 BC. Irrefutable evidence of this is provided by the hundreds of sling bullets bearing his name, along with those of several commanders from his army, such as Hipponikos, Potalos, Kleoboulos and Anaxandros. The present article evaluates the significance of inscribed sling bullets as a basic source in reconstructing historical events related to the Macedonian expansion in Thrace during the reign of Philip II. Through the discussion of a number of examples from Thrace, Macedonia and Northern Aegean, including previously unpublished finds, I argue that these objects can serve as a reliable marker of Macedonian mobility abroad. As a major source on the subject I further analyze the primary data generated as a result of the recent archaeological excavations of the Thracian fortified complex near Kozi Gramadi, located in south central Bulgaria. On a broader level, the present survey aims to reinforce the value of sling bullets as a necessary object of study which on account of their multi-layered nature should invite the application of an integrated approach towards antiquity by combining data from archaeology, history and epigraphy.

El estudio y análisis del complejo sistema de fosos del yacimiento de Los Castellazos, en Mediana de Aragón, Zaragoza, ha llevado a identificar a la honda como una de las armas más utilizadas por la república de Roma para el ataque y asalto de fortificaciones. Para ello se ha realizado el cálculo del alcance de los proyectiles de honda, llegan-do a la conclusión de que la presencia de defensas exteriores alejadas de los recintos defensivos tiene su explicación en la necesidad de defenderse de esta arma, sobre todo a partir de finales del siglo III y comienzos del siglo II a. C.

The study and analysis of the complex system of moats around Los Castellazos site (Mediana de Aragón, Zaragoza) has made possible to identify the sling as one of the most popular weapon to attack and besiege fortifications during the Roman Republic. For this, a calculation of the range of the projectiles was carried out. To conclude, the need for protection from this weapon explains the existence of outer defences, distant from the defensive enclosures , especially from the end of the 3rd Century B.C. and the beginning of the 2nd.

The wide variety of hemiplegicsling designs, the lack of a uniform approach to sling selection, and the paucity of research data in this area have tended to make prescribing a sling a subjective process. Based on clinical experience and a comprehensive literature review, the authors propose a checklist for examining hemiplegic slings. The Checklist, which includes 19 desirable and 4 undesirable characteristics of slings, provides a more objective basis for comparing sling designs, warns of potential hazards, and facilitates the thorough examination of hemiplegic slings. The uses and limitations of the Checklist are discussed.

The slingshots from Serbia are exceptional proof of the employment of slingers in this part of the Roman empire. Unfortunately, the provenance of the lead sling-shots from the National Museum in Belgrade is mostly unknown, but all are of the same type: with circular cross-section and pointed ends. However, the provenance of a few slingshots have been traced to archaeological explorations of the 2nd century Roman fortress at Stojnik on the Kosmaj mountain. The fortress was built for the control and protection of nearby Roman silver and lead mines. The dimensions and weight of the lead slingshots from the Stojnik fortress,as well as other specimens of the same type from the National Museum in Belgrade, are almost identical. Their weight range varies between 126–138 g which could correspond to five Roman uncia (1 quincunx = 136.44 g) or 30–32 Atic drachmas (1 drachma = 4.336 g). Besides several lead examples from the National Museum in Belgrade, the largest find of clay slingshots originates from Cezava, i.e . the Roman fort Novae. The clay slingshots from Cezava were
discovered during archaeological excavations of the Roman military fort Novae in the Iron Gates.

В статье приводятся подробное описание и классификация каменных метательных ядер, обнаруженных в ходе археологических раскопок на территории Белинского городища в 1996-2017 гг. Автор опирается на типологию, предложенную Д.В. Журавлевым и Г.А. Камелиной. В соответствие с ней все обнаруженные на городище ядра делятся на четыре типа в зависимости от их веса. К первому типу относится наибольшее количество ядер (29 экз.), отличающиеся малым весом и предназначенных для метания с помощью пращи и ее производных. Ядра, относящиеся к типам 2, 3, 4, имеют больший вес и размер и предназначались для метания с помощью камнеметательных машин. Общая датировка ядер варьируется от первой четверти II до начала V в. н.э. Данные позволяют сделать ряд выводов относительно истории Белинского городища и Боспорского царства: Белинское городище, являющееся пограничной крепостью в системе обороны Европейского Боспора, подверглось вторжению варваров в период «готского нашествия» в середине III в. н.э.; каменные ядра значительных размеров позволяют сделать вывод, что при штурме использовались метательные машины, однако нет возможности установить, наступающими или обороняющимися они применялись.
