The Lavandula genus, belonging to the Lamiaceae, includes 39 species, with nearly 400 registered cultivars. Lavandula are worldwide plants that occur over the Mediterranean, Europe, North Africa, southwest Asia to southeast India. Lavandula plants have been used since ancient time to flavor and preserved food, to treat diseases including wound healing, sedative, antispasmodic, microbial and viral infections. Numerous researches have described the chemical composition and the primary components of lavender oils are the monoterpenoids (linalool, linalyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, β-ocimene, terpinen-4-ol, and camphor), sesquiterpenoids (β-caryophyllene and nerolidol) and other terpenoid compounds (e.g., perillyl alcohol). The high concentrations of linalyl acetate make them attractive in perfumery, flavoring, cosmetics and soap industries. The Lavandula genus, which includes lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and lavandin (L. angustifolia × Lavandula latifolia), is cultivated worldwide for its essential oils, which find applications in perfumes, cosmetics, food processing and, more recently, in aromatherapy products. The chemical composition of lavender and lavandin essential oils, usually produced by steam distillation from the flowering stems, is characterized by the presence of terpenes (e.g. linalool and linalyl acetate) and terpenoids (e.g. 1,8-cineole), which are mainly responsible for their characteristic flavour and their biological and therapeutic properties. A total of 28 different plants from different regions of Çanakkale, Turkey, were investigated for their antioxidant capacity and total phenol contents to find new potential sources of natural antioxidants. The antioxidant capacity of methanolic extracts prepared from various parts of plants was evaluated by both trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, while the total phenolics were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The TEAC values of plant extracts ranged in a large scale from 1472.36 to 17.61 μmol of trolox equivalents per g dry weight (dw), and EC50 values (concentration at which 50% radical scavenging occurred) varied from 0.174 to 42.475 mg dw of plant, while the total phenol content of plant extracts ranged between 117.20 and 1.27 mg of gallic acid equivalents per g dw. There was a positive linear correlation between the TEAC and total phenols of plant materials (r = 0.916). The extracts of Hypericum perforatum, Arbutus andrachne and Paliurus spina-christii showed higher antioxidant activities (both TEAC and DPPH assays). However, there was no clear relationship between TEAC and EC50 values (r = 0.477) of plant extracts.

Okrasná, aromatická, léčivá, uklidňující, to vše v sobě propojuje bylina, polokeř, prostě levandule. Spojována je zejména s Francií s oblastí Provence, ovšem s úspěchem ji lze pěstovat i v České republice. Chce to ale cit, znalosti a respekt k samotné rostlině s vědomím místních půdně-klimatických podmínek.

Introduction: This in vitro study aimed to compare the antimicrobial effect of lavandula -0fficinalis extract, with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCL) and chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), as root canal irrigants, on Enterococcus faecalis (EF).
Materials &Methods: Seventy five extracted single-rooted premolars were selected. Root canals were prepared using rotary ProTaper system and were infected with the culture of E. faecalis. Specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 15), Group 1, 2: lavandula extracts (0.26 and 0.52 mg/mL), Group 3: 2.5%NaOCL, Group 4: 2%CHX, Group 5: Normal Saline. Irrigation was performed for each group for 5, 10 and 15 min. The viable bacteria obtained by collecting the canal dentin chips. Data analysis was performed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney u tests.
Results: The mean number of viable bacteria was significantly reduced after 5 min exposure to lavandula solutions (p<0.05). A significant difference also existed between different times in the NaOCL group, being significant between 5 and 15 min (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between different times in the CHX group. Comparison of the mean number of viable bacteria between different groups at different exposure times revealed that the difference between lavandula and NaOCL solutions with CHX was significant at 5 and 10 min (p<0.05), however, no statistically significant difference was observed between lavandula solutions and NaOCL.
Conclusion: lavandula extract was effective in killing of EF.  Further studies are necessary to fully understand its other properties such as tissue solubility, removal of smear layer and impact on dentin structure.

Introduction: We studied the chemical composition and antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activities of essential oils from flowers of Lavandula angustifolia grown in Southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: The chemical profile of essential oil was evaluated by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial activity was tested against six bacterial strains. The antioxidant activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test and the antiproliferative activity against three human cancer cell lines, MCF-7, NCI-H460, and MOLT-4, were investigated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-Yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide tests.
