Flexural modulus

The main objective of the study was to investigate the mechanical properties of Moso bamboo species (Phyllostachys pubescens) in wet and dry conditions and waste rubber engineered bamboo, according to climate for temporary shelter design during flood occurrence. For experiment, bamboo of diameter 5 cm and made four samples (length 25 mm, width 3 mm and thickness 1.5 mm) for testing tensile strength and flexure modulus (length 13 mm, width 2 mm and thickness 1 mm). The study finds that the tensile stress for dry sample (A) was 29.0 MPa; elongation break was 4.5% and these parameters for water soaked sample (A1) were 17.1 MPa and 10.6% respectively. Tensile stress for dry sample laminated with rubber tube (B) was 31.5 MPa; elongation break was 3.1% and these parameters for rubber tube laminated water soaked sample (B1) were 19.9 MPa and 5.6% respectively. Flexural strength for samples A, A1, B and B1 were 290.5, 283.1, 339.9 and 292.8 MPa respectively. Results indicate that the strength of rubber tube laminated samples increases. The study concludes that vehicles' waste rubber tubes can be utilized to enhance the strength of bamboo for making temporary shelter in flood affected areas.

A provisionalization sequence is essential for obtaining a predictable final prosthetic outcome. An assessment of the mechanical behavior of interim prosthetic materials could orient clinicians towards selecting an appropriate material for each clinical case. The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the mechanical behavior—with compressive and three-point flexural tests—of certain 3D-printed and conventional resins used to obtain interim fixed dental prostheses. Four interim resin materials were investigated: two 3D-printed resins and two conventional resins (an auto-polymerized resin and a pressure/heat-cured acrylic resin). Cylindrically shaped samples (25 × 25 mm/diameter × height) were obtained for the compression tests and bar-shaped samples (80 × 20 × 5 mm/length × width × thickness) were produced for the flexural tests, observing the producers’ recommendations. ABSTRACT The growing amount of plastic parts produced nowadays makes the search for alternatives in recycling and the further use of these nonbiodegradable materials imperative. The degradation of the mechanical properties of recycled plastic products poses the primary limitation for the usage of recycled plastic. One of the foremost causes of mechanical property degradation is variation in processing parameters. An appropriate optimization method that effectively controls all influential processing parameters during manufacturing is therefore critical. This study investigates the effects of injection molding parameters on the mechanical properties of recycled plastic parts. The preliminary experiment is conducted by using Moldflow Plastic Insight (MPI) integrated with the L18 Taguchi orthogonal array (OA). The significant processing parameters obtained from the preliminary experiment were used to conduct the principal experiment. By adopting L9 Taguchi OA, the parts made from recycled plastic were produced by injection molding. ANOVA confirms that the most significant factor for flexural modulus of a recycled toolbox tray is injection time (∼40.49% percentage contribution). For stress at yield, the most significant factor is melt temperature with percentage contribution of about 43.34%.

Open core metallic sandwich panels are novel type of structures, enabled by
innovative fabrication and topology design tools. Flexural modulus is a basic property of the material in such fabricated open core structures welding by spot welding. In the present work spot welded metallic panels are used to optimize the geometry. Based on the analysis, panel structure parameters considered are Thickness of the sheet, Core height, Core shape, Panel size and Material constituents of panel face sheet, bottom sheet and core. The parameters are analyzed by Taguchi design of experiments by considering orthogonal array of L36.The main aim is to optimize the panel dimensions on flexural modulus of a fabricated metallic panel, using Finite Element Analysis. The problem is modeled in ANSYS and the flexural modulus is evaluated in the transverse direction by three point bending test (ASTM D790). The optimum dimensions are evaluated by Taguchi Analysis. The results show that the proposed approach can find optimal dimensions considering both better and more robust design.
