CHALLENGES FACING COMMERCIAL BANKS IN KENYA DUE TO ADOPTION OF E-BANKING SERVICES

Foreign exchange bureaus (FOREX Bureaus) were established and first licensed in January 1995 with the main objective of fostering competition and narrowing the exchange rate spread in the spot foreign exchange market. The FOREX bureaus are expected to engage in spot transactions and may facilitate domestic money transfer if appointed as agents. There is an appeal to the Government to introduce regulations to govern operations on online FOREX trading because the companies working online are being harassed and extorted by police for operating illegally whereas there is no law that guides their operations.

The purpose of this study is to establish whether t
he use of information technology (IT) by elected
municipal representatives, for constituency work, e
mboldens the adoption of e-service in municipals of
a
developing country. The research data was obtained
through the completion of a questionnaire by a
sample of respondents who serve as authorities of I
T in South African municipals. The findings from bo
th
descriptive and inferential data analysis of collec
ted data confirm that the use of IT by elected muni
cipal
representatives for constituency work impacts the a
doption of e-service in municipals. Furthermore, th
e
use of IT by elected municipal representatives for
constituency work correlated with both e-service la
ws
and e-service security. This study contributes to a
better understanding of choices needed when planni
ng
for the adoption of e-service initiatives in munici
pals of developing countries. Given that 87.2% of
respondents are aware of a high access to telephone
mobile, a further research is needed to clarify wh
y
most elected municipal representatives of a develop
ing country choose not to exploit IT for their
constituency work, and similarly why municipals of
a developing country do not exploit IT to provide
services.
