History

The American Bibliographic Center (ABC) was founded in 1955 to create serial bibliographies. Soon after, CLIO Press was formed to publish historical periodicals, and ABC-CLIO was born. Over the years, we’ve expanded our focus to include many disciplines, and we have grown with the spread of 21st-century technologies to be a leader in online reference publishing.

In 2021, ABC-CLIO was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing, a leading independent publishing house, to support its Academic division. Founded in 1986 by Nigel Newton, Bloomsbury has offices in London, New York, New Delhi, Oxford and Sydney, and has published numerous award-winning titles and commercial successes, including the internationally best-selling Harry Potter series. Learn more about Bloomsbury USA
