The built environment is important and that a surface parking lot was replaced by a building should be considered a measure of progress. That the building seems a bit mediocre in its design is less exciting. Providence's strong suit is its wonderful old architecture. I think we're a long way from being overwhelmed with mediocrity. It's the multiple generic (cheap) suburban type new hotels which concern me more than this building.
You might not like it, I may not like it, the Mayor may not like it, the Governor may not like it. But no review board's gonna consider it outside of allowable parameters, so let's get it up and paying taxes. What concerns me more than ugly buildings and generic hotels, in fact more than both put together, is the economic viability of the city. Like it's mother state, Providence is broke. Worse than broke. And if you think it's hard to attract business now, just wait till they're belly up. Tell me if you've heard this one before: beggars can't be choosers.
Downtown Providence has design review- you can't build whatever you want. Thank Gawd.
the question is what are the borders of Downtown Providence and where does the design review end? To me this is a much needed structure adding to the density of Canal Street and lower North Main Street corridor. And it is obliterating a surface parking lot which have proliferated throughout downtown since the late 40's.
And they asked for nothing except approval of the height variance.
I am not impressed with those who are on the design review board when you consider what is going up across the street from the Convention Center.

stand corrected they got tax stabilization, which I guess is now part of the construction culture in Providence. But, it pays much more than a parking lot.
