Does anyone have any comments on what Cranston is like?
We're considering the Providence RI area as a place to move to and retire. I've never been to Providence, my wife remembers it and Cranston from her college days (40 years ago) not very fondly. I'm intrigued by what seem like reasonable prices (on line) for houses in the Providence area, many of which seem to be listed in Cranston.
What's it like to live in Cranston? How safe is it, regarding crime? Are there any social/recreational/cultural things going on there? Restaurants, etc.?
Cranston has a lot of different neighborhoods each with its own character so it depends on where you live. Safety and restaurants would not generally be problematic. Be sure to check property taxes since a lot of retirees find the property taxes in RI a burden. Some neighborhoods are:
Arlington
Auburn
B
Belmont Park
Betsey Williams & Norwood
Bud Long
C
Castleton Estates
Comstock and Plainfield
Comstock Pkwy
E
Eden Park
Edgewood
F
Forest Hills

K

Cranston is probably the most diverse small city in Rhode Island. Something for everybody. Western Cranston has a suburban to rural character where plats of McMansions & farms sit side-by-side. Edgewood, often compared to Providence's East Side, is on and near the water with an older, charming feel. Pawtuxet Village, which Cranston shares with Warwick, is considered by many as some of the most desirable real estate in RI. Small restored cottages fetch up to $500,000.
Much of the rest of Cranston is typical suburban. Garden City is popular due to its affordable housing stock and convenience to terrific shopping in the pleasant Garden City Shopping Ctr. Dean Estates in a throwback to another time with luxury, well landscaped, houses built in the 60s & 70s. Reminiscent of Southern California to some.
Also, there are some charming more urban older neighborhoods dispersed near the Providence line. Prices in Cranston run generally from the low $200s in the older neighborhoods to over $1,000,000 on the water in Edgewood.
We bought in Cranston, Oaklawn area a few years ago, and it is perfect for us. Crime in our area is negligible. We can walk to the Mall and Movie theater and have several options as far as restaurants go. Also, can't go wrong with Pfred's. The area is perfect for us, because I need public transportation to work in Providence (25 minutes and 3 bus route choices!!!) and my partner works in Narragansett (he gets to avoid the traffic into downtown Providence (we use to live near Central H.S.).
We have a 6 minute drive to TF Green Airport and immediate access to two of the three freeways in Rhode Island. RI's main shopping road is highway 2 (major suburban bummer....but almost everything is located there)

Very safe just don't cross the line going into providence which would be the south providence area which is not good. That's just the east side the west side is very wealthy with middle to upper middle class areas.
There are lots of quiet, leafy neighborhoods in Cranston. It is economically diverse as well. However, be forewarned: it lacks walkability. To get just about anywhere in town you will have to navigate ugly sprawl. That aspect could be worse, though: at least it is not Warwick!
