That's why they put out that license plate with the pronunciation right on there.

There are two correct ways.

One will get you beat up, and the other won't

A good New England accent would call it Ark in sore. Ouch!

Having spent over 50 years living in New England we actually called it AHH-can-sah.

Now that I live in Nev-add-ah, I have to really work to not pronounce Ne-VAHH-da.

Oh, don't work on it too hard, jfitt. It's just that we know you're a recent transplant if you are pronouncing it the "wrong" way.

I don't mind hearing it from local folk or visitors but I think that politicians and newscasters in other states should take the time to know the "correct" pronunciation of a state no matter what state it is. Like the time when President George W. Bush came to Las Vegas and mispronounced Nevada or some of the national newscasters mispronouncing it.

Maybe it's not as bad as mispronouncing Illinois as Illih- noise but it does irritate most Nevadans like fingernails across a chalkboard as it does to Oregonians when somebody pronounces their state, Oree-gone.

I was born in Illinois so I know about people saying Illi-noise.

I recently heard a good description of how to say Nevada. Much like Banana... Nevada... banana.... close enough for me.

So it's Nev-add-ah, not Ne-Vah-Dah? Just want to be sure so I don't have a lynch mob after me!

OMG, I hate having to tell people the "S" is silent and then they look at me funny!

Nev-a-da, Ba-na-na! Got it.

of course the name Nevada is from the spanish word Nevada, which means snow capped mountains, and it was pronounced nev-ada, not ne-va-duh, although the duh part is quite appropriate for the rural locations
