If there have been problems in the area, local law enforcement will know about it. (Most times). Also letting them know that you will be in the area can be useful in case of trouble or an emergency, don't you agree?)

Also, carry a whistle,a small mirror and some type of radio or portable CB.

This is Nevada, if you set off a bomb, chances are no one will hear it, a whistle won't do you much good.
By mirror I think the poster meant a signal mirror, I always carry an old CD in my glove compartment, you can sight through the hole to see where your flash is going, not that anyone will see, most aircraft flying low enough to see your flash in Nevada are doing 600 mph.
A two way radio and or CB won't have the range to communicate with anyone. If you are on a budget, get SPOT, check them at findmespot.com
If your budget can handle it, get an Iridium Satphone
( Yes I did mean a signaling mirror, although ANY reflective item will be useful. A CB and/or radio CAN be use for signaling people that are relatively close. I'm sure that you are aware that even a simple FRS radio can have a range of up to 35 miles in the right weather/sun spot conditions. And the last time I checked it's doubtful that anybody is going to more than 50 miles AT THE MOST from anybody anywhere in Nevada. That includes ranchers,Native peoples,or the BLM,)
If you are qualified you you might consider carrying either a shotgun or a small caliber revolver (mostly for protection against animals)

It is Nevada, you don't need to be qualified. And, there isn't a single animal in the state of Nevada the least bit interested bothering you, you would carry that weapon the rest of your life and never find the need to use it.
Wild men? Are you ready to kill a human, to take their life? Lots of people carry, few are prepared to kill, it isn't an easy thing to do, and again, you will carry that weapon around for the rest of your life without needing to use it.( Are you FROM Nevada, poster? Because the Nevada I grew up in has black bears, cougars, coyotes (even rabid ones) and wild hogs. Not to mention snakes. Any of which can cause injury or threaten people in the wild. There are also any number of "Central Nevada weirdos" wandering around out in the desert that might not just leave when asked to do so.
And by "qualified" I meant capable of loading, cleaning and using a firearm. And if necessary, using against another human being. Any idiot can purchase and carry a weapon.)

And finally,when/if you are going to be in a very remote area for a while, make sure that one or more people (and not just the ones you are traveling with...LOL) know where you are going to be and when you are returning.

That is a good suggestion, unless you are like me, "mmm wonder what is over there?" I don't tell anyone where I am going, cause I usually change my mind and go elsewhere. But, I carry SPOT and at noon and in the evening I send an OK message, it goes via satellite to my wife's computer, she gets an email with my lat and long and my location on a googlemap. So, twice a day, she knows where I am, or was. ( I'm sorry, but that is just very poor judgment on your part, isn't it? It is a sign of person that is a potential danger to themselves and other that they would go to a remote area w/o an adequate plan and depend on a piece of technology that may or may not work,to keep them "safe."
A well-thought advance plan, coupled w/ letting somebody responsible know where you are going, is much more effective in case you encounter trouble than hoping that your tech-based lifeline will save you.)

I hope that you have a safe and enjoyable time while you are in the Silver State.

I would be interested in knowing more about your archeology. Did you know, that in this state there is an ancient stone alignment? Much like Stonehenge, but more primitive, although the alignments are good. Very little known, and even less visited.
See my responses your posting above.

Ancient stone alignment? Like stonehenge? Tell me more, I seek out unusual things in Nevada
I admit, I put that in as a tease, most people who live in Nevada are urban/suburban people, there are few actual rural types. 265,814 live in rural Nevada out of 2,643,085 Which means that 90% of the population is urban/suburban, with urban suburban proclivities.

What I enjoy about Nevada is the rural empty wild land. There are many mysteries and mysterious places in the State. It really is, the last best place. I could show you a cave with writing inside done in axle grease, 167 years ago. That one I can tell you the location of, as it is well known, it is up High Rock Canyon.

There are two places outside the Nevada test range where nuclear bombs were exploded, not many people know about that!

But, the rock alignment, has to remain mostly unknown, although I know by posting it here many will read this, but, then they have to figure out where it is, which isn't easy. Once the location on the ground is known it is a days walk from the nearest road across a difficult to cross gorge, through timber so thick, a horse cannot be used. The site is waterless, the nearest water is,, in your truck.

It is well protected by mother nature.

So, have I piqued your interest? Good. Now comes your search.

How about a cave so vast you could fly a helicopter into it?

Pretty cool, eh?

Regarding my mention of lighting off a bomb and no one will hear it, one night a friend and I were soaking in one of Nevada's hot springs. The southern sky lit up orange then went dark, several minutes later we heard a rumble. Someone lit off a bomb, or a great pile of old ammunition.

There was never a mention in the media of the explosion. but we deduced it was at Hawthorne and it was indeed old ammo getting blown up. The hot springs we were in was over 100 miles away, cool, eh?

Truth?

Thanks.

Hi Clark, yep, found those 2 test sites last summer, drove right into one of them thinking, hmm, thats funny, it looks like the ground just sunk here, then I found the plaque. Have you followed the roads north from there, looks like series of old stage stops. Someone else mentioned a huge cave, I have not found that yet, any hints? Any hints on the stone art? I get bored somedays and just head out to the hills to get lost, and find myself.

To the original poster, I'm a woman and I've spent 8 summers wandering back roads in Nevada, the most unsavory characters I've met were big rattlesnakes.
