I think that if same sex marriage should be made legal if it does not induce crime, like illicit drugs and bank robberies. If they can make it legal there, then it should be legal anywhere.

According to my understanding of "right to work" states, can't a person be fired simply because they are gay? Or for that matter can't a person just be fired in NV for any reason with absolutely no recourse?

Default "Right to work" vs. "terminable at will"

A "right to work" state (like Nevada) is one in which an employee does not have to join a union in order to work for an employer that has a union contract. For example, if you work at a hotel as a culinary employee and that hotel has a contract with the culinary union, your pay, benefits, etc. are determined by the contract. But the union cannot make you join and pay union dues. There is more to it than that, but that is the basic meaning of "right to work."

"Terminable at will" means that the employer does not have to have a reason to fire you. That is the general rule in Nevada (and many other states). If the employer gives you a reason when he fires you, the reason may not be a "bad" reason such as race, creed, color, etc.

Nevada Equal Rights Commission Types of Employment Discrimination

This link is to the Nevada Equal Rights Commission web site for further details regarding employment discrimination. Note the reference there to "sexual orientation."

If an employer wishes to avoid any issues regarding "reasons" for firing someone, the employer will simply terminate the employee without giving a reason.

This is not legal advice. I am not your lawyer. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the info. I will look it up and get more informed. Fortunately however I successfully navigated the work place for 30 some years without getting the axe and am now retired. SO I guess I can say that in my case, game over :-).

For what it is worth though I really think it is unfair to just fire someone and not tell them why. When I fired folks I always put it in writing as to why. With a law like that though if I were gay I would join the union just to have protection. However, that's just me.

Again thanx for the explaination and esp the link.

Why is government sanctioning marriage at all? Marriage is a religious insitution - the government should be granting domestic partnerships to any two consenting adults and leave the marriage to whatever religion the couple chooses to have perform the rite.
