the weather has cooled down, and I'm ready to leave the house again! this weekend, battling festivals: FamilyFunFest at Dickey-Stephens Park, and Harvestfest in Hillcrest. I will be attending both, as I've got a kid performing at FamilyFunFest, and Harvestfest has some KILLER bands playing.

speaking of killer bands, I'll be seeing Spearhead at the Village tonight. I've seen them a couple of times before and they always leave everyone sweaty from dancing and smiling ear to ear.

last night was Evita at the Rep. this is the last weekend, so go now if you haven't yet!

2nd Friday Art Night in the Rivermarket tonight! with the lovely weather the crowds are sure to be out. a free trolley will also take art lovers to the Bernie Sculpture Garden for Art in the Park. and later tonight, DO NOT MISS the True Soul Revue at WWT! they are true legends.

Second Friday Art Night, Downtown Little Rock

Friday To-Do: True Soul Revue | Rock Candy

tomorrow is the First Annual World Cheese Dip Championship at Dickey-Stephens Park. between that and the State Fair, it’s a great weekend to eat lots of bad-for-you food! (I’m not sure I’m actually going to the Cheese Dip Championship, but I have to say I love that Dickey-Stephens opens it’s gates to so many non-Travelers events. in the past couple of weeks they’ve also had the Mexican Restaurant Association reception and FamilyFunFest, just to name events I have personally attended.) I will definitely, however, be taking a couple of little kids to Thea Paves the Way, a sidewalk-chalking family festival at the Clinton Musuem. they are a fantastic organization and I like to support them any way I can. and then tomorrow night, the Fair! that's when I really know it's Fall.

Welcome | World Cheese Dip Championship

THEA Paves the Way Saturday - October 9 8:30am - 1:00pm (http://theafoundation.org/THEA_Paves_the_Way/2010_Paves_the_Way.html - broken link)

full disclosure: I WISH I was going to the Blues Festival in Helena this weekend, but that wasn’t meant to be. I am delighted to hear that they’re getting back their old King Biscuit moniker again as of next year. of course, some of us never stopped calling it that!

also don't forget Tales of the Crypt (http://www.mounthollycemetery.com/2010/10/16th-annual-tales-of-crypt-101210.html - broken link), this Tuesday night, 5:30 - 8:30 at Mt. Holly Cemetery! it's one of the coolest events in town every Halloween season, and I'm not just saying that because my kid is in it this year.

the legendary White Water Tavern: 2010 Best Bar! my parents hung out there in the 1970s (along with Bill Clinton), it's burned down at least three times, and still going.

hilarious article. an excerpt:

Quote:
The last time Lucinda Williams played in town, she and some mutual friends had asked about coming out after the show and having a band to play with. So, I set it up at the White Water Tavern. She was a no-show (another story, another time), but it was cool to look out in the crowd to see Pamela Des Barres hippy dancing the night away at the White Water. If only Connie hadn't been banned, we could have had the two most famous groupies in the world under one roof at the White Water Tavern.

thanks, ArkansasSlim! Wildwood is a treasure. I haven't been to the Harvest Festival but the Lanterns Festival is one of my favorite events of the year! so pretty, and they are VERY generous in pouring the wine. more information on the Harvest Festival here (http://www.wildwoodpark.org/festivals-events/details.aspx?id=77. - broken link).

there's a lot going on this weekend. * indicates places I’ll be!

Argenta Third Friday Artwalk (http://argentaartwalk.web.officelive.com/default.aspx - broken link)*

Rendezvous Fall Festival at Pinnacle Mountain* (if you've never been, it’s a historical reenactment-type thing. lots of fun!)

Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival

Race for the Cure

100 Mile Meal at Heifer Village* (incidentally, the last weekends for the farmer’s markets are this month. Wah!)

It’s the last weekend of the State Fair!

music-wise, the Arkansas Chamber Singers are performing “Forward and Bach Again” at St. Mark’s* on Friday and at the Clinton Library on Sunday, and ASO (the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra) will have a Halloween Spookfest at Robinson Auditorium. a little less highbrow, the rescheduled Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show* will be at the Rev Room on Sunday night! yay!

speaking of Halloween, the downtown Haunted Tours continue, and the various haunted houses are beginning to pop up all over town!

in theater, Red Octopus is back with Night of the Living Pagans* at the Public Theatre, and Chicago continues at the Weekend Theater.

I love this time of year. Get out and enjoy!
