The name is benign. I have also heard them called snow squalls. But they can be very dangerous, beautiful, and frightening out here in the desert. Many years ago I was driving on 80 from SLC to Elko. Coming down from Pequop Pass we noticed a cloud of white ahead of us, miles in the distance. It was a cold, clear, sunny winter day. The roads were dry and there were patches of snow on the ground.

When we drove into the snow cloud there was no visibility. It instantly went down to zero. And it was so windy I could not roll up my window and the glass was shaking. The freeway was covered with snow in the blink of an eye. I was a bit freaked out because I had never seen anything like this before. There was no traffic and I slowed way down just to stay on the road. And in 10 or so scary minutes, we drove out the other side and it was like nothing ever happened. It was a Twilight Zone experience.

My Minnesota driving skills on icy roads comes in handy living here in Las Vegas, and we're talking black ice!

You know what happens, in the spring/summer, when it hasn't rained for months, and? It rains! And? You apply the brakes at a stop light, and you slide right through! And? Light turns green, you look both ways for those unable to stop at the light, your tires spin, backend swerves, trying to get some traction! And when a curve in the road comes up, you decelerate to 15MPH, to avoid a spin-out!

Coming here from Minnesota, way back, to escape the snow/ice, I rented a car at the Airport, not taking into consideration black ice, yup! Into the ditch I went on a freeway ramp!

At least the libations will stay cold.

The real scary part is trying to watch 5 million people get to the Strip in a snowstorm. We all know that even 2 drops of rain and these streets are slick, now add a little ice & snow and we invent an all new form of entertainment (as long as you can stay far enough away to keep from getting involved.)

My money is on no accumulation around the Strip, maybe an inch or two in the higher elevations. It may look pretty though, flurries or snowflakes falling at least.

The real issue will be people trying to get in from So Cal. Most people probably have guaranteed reservations so they won't give up easily. Has the makings of some massive wrecks on I-15 at the pass levels.

There's usually some kind of snow/rain, sleet, snow around the valley every winter. Although along the far edges mostly. As an example, I had sleet at my house in the Northwest valley last December.
