One time a few years ago I was about 100 miles away checking on my dad. A friend of mine, who also has an opioid addict son, stopped by my house. She texted me this simple line
B & C are cleaning the baseboards at your house.
I knew immediately what it meant. I got home and they were still cleaning. Now bear in mind, when they are NOT on pain pills they are lethargic because they are in withdrawal so when they were cleaning for hours, I knew. They cleaned the house top to bottom. Washed the curtains, waxed the floors, organized all the cabinets etc etc. Finally at about 10 at night they were done. My son says,
"So mom, how does the house look?"
I said,
Looks great, now let's play a little game I like to call drug test."
Needless to say they were both told to find somewhere else to stay for the night...but at least I got a clean house out of it.

I've been an alcoholic for 40 years. Never had any problem stopping, no side effects, no withdrawal symptoms......just thirsty. One time I stopped for 4 years but started again because I enjoy the taste and the intoxication. These days I never drive after drinking but would if it were an emergency.

I stopped drinking 12 days ago to lose some weight and feel fine. The only downside to drinking alcohol for me is getting up the next day. After my first mug of coffee I feel fine.

The addiction doesn;t seem to occur in all drinkers, maybe it takes a certain amount/day or something.

I'd say the point of addiction happens at the moment your drinking becomes unconscious. In other words when drinking has become as much a part of your day as getting up and putting pants on. Where you don't even have to think about doing it or even remember what motivated you to pick up the bottle. It doesn't even have to occur on a daily basis but the more unconscious the habit becomes the more it begins to infiltrate your mind and dig it's hooks into you.

I'm talking about the physical addiction when you wake up shaking so bad you have to drink your first two drinks through a straw to keep from spilling them

Yeah, that's when you know you've gone WAY too far.

I also felt like some people just do not process alcohol properly, either from birth or due to damage caused by alcohol.Alcohol metabolizes in two stages, at one point the bi-product is called acetaldehyde, a cousin of formaldehyde, which is pretty toxic, its speculation on my part.

Yeah I used to be a daily drinker myself and it really is like putting poison straight into your body. Your liver does the best it can given that alcohol can completely bypass digestion and pass right through your stomach lining. Different people definitely process it differently regardless of weight and gender.
