However, unlike Nevada, they are not coming from the midwest, California and the northeast - they are from Mexico, Guatemala, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, El Salvador, Venezuela, Vietnam and Nicaragua. There's nothing wrong with that. Houston's diversity makes it a fascinating place to live with so much culture at your fingertips.

The downside is crime is very high, human trafficking is overlooked as it is so prominent and gang violence is a real problem. Like Vegas, economic growth is based in accommodating new populations within the service sector. Needless to say, that growth institutionally bars people without that cultural background from reaping the rewards. I get that, we're going to be America's first Third World City.

However, my question is for someone with a degree, who is willing to work, how long do you think it would take to find work which would pay the bills?
I don't think anyone has a magical crystal ball, no one can say how long it would take you to secure a job...whether a low wage job or one that you can use your degree for.

If this was during the boom time, you'd have no trouble, but these are different times now. Being persistent and having patience are the key elements nowadays in the job market, and it's truly a personal decision that only you can make.

I don't know what your degree is in, but honestly, after all the money you spent on your education, would you be personally satisfied by working 4 hours a day in a fast food place? Or, even working part time/on call cleaning toilet bowls and tourist's slop?

In this tough job market, that is a very real scenario for someone who moves here without employment. And you might not even get THAT.

IMO, do as much online as you can, be patient, be persistent and if it doesnt' work out, hey, at least you tried!

If I am moving away from "home," I would be more concerned with making the basics than the frills.

Who do I have to impress in Vegas? No one.
I can answer from ANCIENT HISTORY and memory.....I spent 8 yrs driving a cab many moons ago....some things havent changed.

ALL cabs are company owned here so start-up is simply ...gettin a job....and like all of them you start on Xtra Board usually...Some companies are better then others [my preference was always Whittlesea Cab] most of them pay 50% commission [everything booked] some require that you pay all or part of the gas. Taxi permit thru the Taxi Authority is fairly low...

Hopefully either sheriff or Eventulssurhfghgipod [whatever the h#$* his name is will pop in cause they know more about it then I do.

Very interesting. Here the cabbies are independent contractors. They are also subject to sky-high permit fees on an ongoing basis (the immigrant taxes, as I call it - any entrepreneurial activity dominated by immigrants is taxed to the hills). You lease your cab from the company and pay all the gas plus a daily fee to the company.

I didn't realize they are extra board there. Wow... what a concept. Is hard to land one of those jobs, even if it is extra board?

Landing, EASY....Keeping....not so ....

One company way back when had a policy....3 LOWEST booking drivers did not work the next day.

Some companies are good....some are terrible....it's like any place....I have heard the tips are way down....[when I drove 40 years ago I was reporting 38K a year] I doubt that its like that now, but you will be hard pressed to find ANY driver that will admit how much they're REALLY making.

He makes what most people make in a year, in one month. And all with an 8th grade education.... (He is naturally very inquisitive and a voracious reader). You may even want to try that route...granted, it's not for everyone, but I have seen many people succeed in that field, starting as salesmen.
if he's running the dealership, i am assuming new or used car manager for a franchised dealer. correct?

It looks like Whittlesea is hiring. Hmm... This might actually be an idea to thing about, at least for the time being.
