We fly an American Flag everyday...365x24. Flag protocol says to have a light on it in the dark, so we bought one of those new high powered solar spotlights. Works great.

I don't think HOA's can prevent you from flying an AMERICAN flag, but they can regulate the size. If you are in an HOA they probably could prevent you from flying a Canadian flag. There has been a British flag in a yard about a block from my house for years. I noticed the other day it had become an American flag. I think it just gets to be too much trouble if you do it right, and so many people don't even know there is a right way, let alone that the USMC is sort of the keeper of the flag rules, and they put out a booklet on the proper way to handle, display, and care for the flag. Besides I think the attitude might be that everyone knows this is America so it's not necessary to remind anyone. Flying other country's flags above ours, or not including ours at all is grounds for trouble IMO. There was an Albertson's at Eastern and Bonanza that had Mexican flags on every pole in the lot, but not one American flag. When I mentioned it to someone at Albertson's they just laughed about it. It's no longer an Albertson's, but a lot of businesses in that area fly the Mexican flag.

Wow. Thanks for the info Buzz. Very informative.

I had no idea it could be so complicated. Very interesting. Perhaps it would be better not to place both flags on my lawn, just to be safe.

It was all meant in good clean fun, all to let all my neighbours know I'm Pro U.S.A and proud to live here, and also Pro Tim Hortons and that anyone can drop by anytime and watch the hockey game with us.

Flag protocol? That sounds like a subject that would show up on Seinfeld.

Actually, it's Flag Etiquette, but protocol works too. The U.S. Flag is considered the same as a human being.

Absolutley not. The flag is to be flown and respected as if it were dear to your heart.

American Flag Protocol - Display | USA Flag Site

Please note also that flying the American flag upside down while out on the water is an international distress signal.
