An excellent post by one of Atlanta's best urban observers and commentators.

Walking to a transit station in Atlanta should be a breeze. It should be a thing that you actually want to do — not a dangerous chore that you do only when you have no other choice.

Well, pedestrian improvements at existing stations, along the planned BRT route, and along the planned ART routes are part of the MARTA expansion plan.

Could describe these improvements or do you know of a link where we could take a gander at them? I'm not challenging you, just asking.

As this blog post suggests, the details can be critical. Too often, I fear, a municipality will stripe a sidewalk and say, "Well, we've done the pedestrian improvements."

The old project list from may had some descriptions. Scroll down to the end.

They're vague, mostly, though. Sidewalk repair, intersection improvements, new bus stops, crossing improvements, elevator and ped bridges at stations, etc.

Thanks, fourthwarden.

It's a beginning, but there is much work to be done in this respect. As the OP suggests, transit stations should be particularly pedestrian friendly. I'd like to see them become almost like "home bases" for people on foot.

Current conditions at many stations leave a lot to be desired. Once you leave the station, you may quickly find yourself in territory that's not very hospitable for walkers.

While having slip lanes and other road designs that encourage fast turns by vehicles is not preferred anywhere in the city, especially near transit stations. The behavior in the video the blogger posted is more from driver behavior and not road design. That intersection has no slip lanes and while the corners have large turning radi for an urban setting, it is more due to the curve in North Ave thru the intersection, which ATLUrbanist never mentions (because it doesn't fit his agenda.)
Why did he not report the issue to APD and request additional patrol?
