– 1969-Don Sutton, after going 0-13 in his career against the Cubs, finally ends the jinx by throwing 4-hit ball over 8 innings in the Dodgers` 4-2 victory over Kenny Holtzman in Los Angeles. RBI hits by Andy Kosco and Bill Sudakis put L.A. up 4-1 in the 8th. Cubs are 71-43, in NL East lead, 7 games ahead of New York.

– 1959-While Sox spend day traveling from Washington to Detroit to open series with the Tigers, 2d-place Cleveland wins 6-4 in Kansas City. Sox are 66-42, in 1st place, 2 1/2 games ahead of the Indians. Some numbers: Gerry Staley, in his last 12 appearances covering 22 innings, has allowed 11 hits and 1 earned run.
