Player Outlook
Jacob Young played in 33 games down the stretch after making his MLB debut for the Nationals in late August, and he had a .252/.322/.336 slash line with no homers, 13 steals, 12 RBI and nine runs in 121 plate appearances. It was a solid showing for the 2021 seventh-round pick, especially since he entered the season having never played above Single-A. He split most of the minor-league campaign between the High-A and Double-A levels, and overall he hit .305 with six home runs and 39 steals in 112 contests. The speed and contact skills (18.2 percent strikeout rate) were apparent in his first taste of the majors, as was his limited power. Young will likely need a strong showing during spring training to have a chance of making Washington's Opening Day roster in 2024, and even then he could still begin the campaign at Triple-A Rochester given he basically skipped the affiliate last year.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Swipes two more bags Saturday

Young went 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases in Saturday's 5-4 win against Cincinnati. Young plated the winning run in the close contest with a single to left field in the eighth inning. He also stole a pair of bases for the second straight day, increasing his total to 24 on the campaign. Young was slumping entering the All-Star break, but he's come out hot to start the second half, going 4-for-6 with the four thefts through two games.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Two steals in Friday's win

Young went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two stolen bases in Friday's win over the Reds. The Nationals ran wild on Tyler Stephenson and Cincy's pitching staff, going 5-for-5 in steal attempts on the night. Young had only one stolen base and zero multi-hit performances over his last 16 games before the All-Star break, a stretch in which he slashed a rough .151/.237/.170, but his defense in center field has kept him in the lineup despite his struggles at the plate.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Swipes bag No. 20

Young went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 14-6 win over the Cardinals. The 24-year-old center fielder doesn't offer much with his bat while hitting at the bottom of the order for the Nationals, but Young continues to be a nuisance when he reaches base. Through 78 big-league games this season he's slashing .261/.321/.327 with one homer, 18 RBI, 45 runs and 20 steals in 25 attempts. Washington's youth movement is in full swing, but Young isn't necessarily guaranteed to keep his spot in the starting lineup as Dylan Crews could be the next prospect the team brings up to The Show.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Doubles twice, steals in win

Young went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and a stolen base in a 3-1 loss to the Rays on Friday. The 24-year-old doubled in the third inning and again in the seventh. He then stole third and scored on an errant throw by Rays catcher Alex Jackson. Since June 21, Young has four multi-hit efforts and nine runs scored in seven contests. On the season, he is hitting .272 with one home run, 18 RBI, 40 runs scored and 19 steals in 240 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Ends drought on basepaths

Young went 0-for-3 with a run scored and his 18th stolen base of the season in Monday's extra-inning loss to the Padres. The center fielder was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning, stole third base after a CJ Abrams infield single, then trotted home on a Joey Meneses knock. Young had racked up seven hits over the prior three games, and through 20 games in June he's slashing .262/.314/.354; however, Monday's steal was surprisingly his first of the month in three attempts.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Doubles twice, scores three runs

Young went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored in Friday's victory against Colorado. Young doubled and scored in both the third and sixth innings while also crossing home in the fourth. He's been very all-or-nothing this month; Young has four multi-hit performances in 17 games but has totaled just three hits in the other 13 games combined. This inconsistent run has lowered his season slash line to .263/.319/.328 with 11 extra-base hits and 17 steals through 64 games.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Launches first homer

Young went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's win against Miami. Young launched the first home run of his career, a fifth-inning blast off Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo. Even with minimal power, the 24-year-old has carved out an everyday role due to his high average and ability to steal bases. Young has played in 60 games on the season, batting .265 with one home run, 17 RBI, 31 runs scored and 17 stolen bases in 21 attempts.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: On base four times in return

Young went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Mets. The center fielder had missed the prior two games due to swelling in his throwing hand, but Young was the Nationals' most effective offensive weapon in his return, collecting half of the team's six hits on the night. The 24-year-old offers basically no power -- his last extra-base hit was a double on May 19 -- but through 49 games this season he's batting .282 with 17 steals, 25 runs and 16 RBI.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Returns to Washington lineup

Young (hand) will start in center field and bat ninth in Tuesday's game versus the Mets. Young missed two starts with swelling in his right hand but is feeling well enough to give it a go Tuesday against left-hander David Peterson and the Mets. The speedy Young is tied for fourth in baseball this season with 17 stolen bases.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Held out of lineup again

Young (hand) remains out of the lineup for Monday's contest versus the Mets. Young exited Saturday's game against the Guardians with swelling in his right hand and has now been out of the lineup for two straight tilts. He attempted to do some hitting Monday but was still sore, per Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post. Lane Thomas will again slide over from right field to cover center field while Young rests up.

Young (hand) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.comreports. Lane Thomas will shift to center field while Jesse Winker and Eddie Rosario start in the corner outfield Sunday.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Has hand swelling

Young is day-to-day with swelling in his throwing hand, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports Saturday. The swelling occurred during early portions of Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Guardians and Young opted to report it to a team trainer during a pitching change in the sixth inning, resulting in his removal from the game. His status for Sunday's game remains up in the air and won't be known until closer to first pitch.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Exits with trainer

Young was removed from Saturday's game against the Guardians with an undisclosed injury, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. A trainer tended to Young while the Nationals made a pitching change in the bottom of the sixth inning before walking Young off the field. Eddie Rosario will fill center field while Joey Gallo enters the game in left. It's unclear exactly what type of injury Young is dealing with, but we should learn more later Saturday.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Steals 17th bag

Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's win over Atlanta. The 24-year-old center fielder has heated up again, batting .345 (10-for-29) over the last 10 games. Young remains limited as a fantasy asset -- he has yet to hit a homer this year and has a 4.5 percent walk rate -- but he tends to take full advantage when he does get on base. He's slashing .279/.338/.329 through 46 big-league games with 17 steals in 20 attempts, plus 14 RBI and 25 runs.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Collects three hits, stolen base

Young went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and one RBI in Monday's 8-4 victory over Atlanta. Young hit three singles and added his 12th RBI of the season in the sixth inning. Most importantly to fantasy owners, the Washington center fielder swiped his 16th base, moving him into a tie for fourth place in the majors. Overall, Young sports a .275/.329/.328 slash line in 146 plate appearances with 23 runs scored. He should continue to play full time despite Lane Thomas (knee) returning Monday, as the Nationals designated Victor Robles for assignment to open a roster spot for Thomas.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Resting Sunday

Young is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Seattle, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Young will get a break after starting the last seven games at center field while going 6-for-23 with three RBI. With Young and Jesse Winker (quadricep) on the bench, Ildemaro Vargas, Victor Robles and Eddie Rosario will form the Washington outfield from left to right.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Nabs 15th steal

Young went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Monday's win over the Twins. The 24-year-old center fielder's ability to flip the lineup over from the bottom of the order was a key part of the Nationals' 12-run eruption Monday. Young has hit safely in five straight games and is up to 15 steals in 17 attempts on the season, but his overall numbers have sagged in May -- he's slashing .208/.304/.271 through 56 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Pilfers 14th bag

Young went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox. Getting another start in the leadoff spot, Young swiped his 14th bag of the season, tying him for fifth in the majors behind Elly De La Cruz (26), Jose Caballero (17), Brice Turang (16) and Bobby Witt (15). Young only has two successful steals through 12 games in May though, as his issues getting on base consistently are catching up to him -- he's slashing only .167/.295/.222 on the month. The Nationals have been shut out in back-to-back games and sit in the bottom six in runs scored and team OPS on the season, and unless Young heats up at the plate, his time at the top of the order is likely about to end.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Available off bench Saturday

Young (back) is not starting in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays but is available to pinch hit or run, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Young was removed in the fifth inning of Friday's 9-3 win over the Blue Jays due to back spasms, and he was replaced by Jesse Winker. Alex Call will start in center field Saturday and hit eighth against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Takes seat Wednesday

Young is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Young produced three hits over the Nationals' last two games to lift his season average up to .267, but he still looks to be stuck in a part-time role in center field. He and Eddie Rosario have now drawn three starts apiece at the position over a stretch of six games.
