Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia is in the middle ground between the first and the second episode. The variety of the gameplay is acceptable but the flawed AI and controls are the same from the previous chapters.

The most challenging of the Chronicles series, the most infuriating, but also the most varied and fun if you liked the past iterations. Don’t expect anything revolutionary though, pun intended.

Though it doesn't stand up to the franchise's grander releases, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia is a fun and thoughtful stealth experience, easily the best to bear the Chronicles name.

Ubisoft's spin-off trilogy ends with a controversial episode. It keeps the great art style and many of the mechanics from the previous games, but its second half is filled with overly difficult, punishing and frustrating sections, something not every player will have the patience to endure. Its many contents and references to Assassin's Creed lore, however, make it a good buy for fans of the series.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia has good ideas and a compelling presentation but it punishes the player so much, that it ends up being frustrating and repetitive rather than fun.

Chronicles ends not with a bang or a whimper, but a shrug.
  7. Without wishing to be Volga, this is a real kick in the Urals. Punitive old-school design meets needless contemporary complexities, with rehashed set-pieces Putin the final nail in the coffin.

Russia finally gives the Chronicles series a good story. The main protagonist Nikolai is kind of a boring guy, but the secondary playableRussia finally gives the Chronicles series a good story. The main protagonist Nikolai is kind of a boring guy, but the secondary playable character Anastasia is quite likable and keeps things compelling by adding a little family tragedy to the mix. The plot capitalizes on the events of the previous two games well, really showing off how this has all been one continuous narrative as opposed to three disconnected side-stories in the overall Assassin's Creed canon, and it's nice to see what becomes of that Precursor box.

The graphics don't hold a candle to the beauty of India before it, but still manage to impress thanks to their unique style. The bright reds of what you can climb on provide a striking contrast to the black and white world around them. It calls to mind Mirror's Edge and makes highly detailed characters standout from the backgrounds in a way that causes them to pop into perspective. The game looks like a propaganda poster come to life and is much more pleasing to the eye than the dreary greys and browns of China.

The gameplay is the most challenging in the trilogy. This is mostly due to the fact you're given only one health bar at the start of the game and therefore a single hit will kill you. Apparently the developers thought that because this is the last Chronicles game they could push our skills acquired from the previous two games to the max as upgrades to your health (as well as your other skills) are locked behind some obscene ranking requirements. Want things to be easier? Then perform better. What's surprising though is that the insta-kill tedium of India never manages to set in here thanks to the meticulous level design. It's always clear what you'll need to do in order to proceed. This allows the main stages to test your abilities without ever really becoming irritating. The same can't quite be said of the returning chase sequences as sometimes the amount of perfection required can be infuriating. A bit involving outrunning a tank is the most frustrating thing I've done in any AC game to date. However, even at it's most demanding to the challenge never feels insurmountable. Completing it was one of the more rewarding gaming I've had over the years.

Russia fixes a few of the problems the previous Chronicles games have had. Mainly by giving the sub-series a solid story to tell, but also by making up for a lot of India's gameplay deficiencies. It manages to be difficult while rarely feeling cheap and the later stages provide a nice amount of variety in the types of situations you'll encounter. The new tools you are given access to as a result of the time period it's set in are some of the most fun the overall series has to offer. I loved having near-constant access to a rifle and the winch has many exciting uses. Players will have to put up with a high difficultly level and some aggravating chase sequences, but Russia rewards those who take the time to master it.

    Assassins Creed Chronicles Russia
    Trial and Error Garbage
Its no secret that I’m an assassins creed fan boy, and its also no secret that am a #AssassinsCreedChroniclesHater Don’t get me wrong, this is a challenging and beautiful series, but its an awful unfun series that I hope Ubisoft never brings back.
China probably my favorite, a nice tie to the ac story with the box, then we go to India much more color, we get a love story and a decently enjoyable campaign… but here in Russia we do go back to the story of the box and a mystery assassin that I’m not going to spoil as you’re running through this game as two characters, Nikolai and Anastasia in 1918
But the campaign you’re given here is brutally panful and unnecessarily difficult and just completely unfun..if you want an in depth idea of the mechanics of this game go back and watch the china and india reviews.. those are the only 2 games in this series even remotely worth suffering through anyway..
but basically this is the stealthiest campaign in the trilogy..
Nikolai is a trained rugged russian assassin but from bullets to muy tai elbow strikes.. it doesn’t matter.. you die in one hut yet enemies are unfairly balanced to take multiple blows and not even flinch…
you do have a rifle with you which I’m guessing is the reason its so easy for you to die.. this is the most powerful tool in the trilogy.. you also have smoke bombs and the ability to whistle… as well as a grappling thing to mess with electricity.. no helix powers though.. those belong to Anastasia who can dissolve enemies instantly as well as dash through hiding spots..
what makes this game so painful this time around is that this 3rd game in the trilogy is essentially a collection of every bad thing in assassins creed all in one convenient package
tons of insta fail missions where if youre spotted youre set back to a checkpoint, and even if the mission doesn’t make this a stipulation it doesn’t matter.. enemies have automatic rifles and extreme accuracy, its practically isntadeath unless you get a lucky dodge….
worse is there are missions where youre tasked to clear a room or an entire train of enemies with again not taking one single hit or being spotted once…
they also somehow ruined the only good thing this series had going for it..
the runner bits.. full of action and excitement.. its turned into trial and error guess work that requires precise timing, 0 room for error, and absolutely no indication or direction on whats coming next…
so its and endless loop of die and try again…
I know as an assassins creed fan youre going to see the box again and just have to see the story out.. youre going to torture yourself by making you go through this painful campaign, but I have good news.. we have youtube.
    watch the story there.
forget the like 3 trophies you get for completing this garbage
I give Assassins Creed Chronicles Russia a 2/10
