If you have bad credit, getting approved for a credit card – or other financial products – can feel hopeless.

But there are options out there, especially if you opt to go with a secured credit card. There are two credit card categories: secured and unsecured. Secured credit cards require you to put down a refundable deposit to open them, whereas unsecured or traditional ones do not.

It’s important to remember that you can still be declined for some of these secured and unsecured cards listed below based on income, pending bankruptcy, debt or other financial factors. But these cards will give you a better chance of getting approved with less than stellar credit.

Best for: Those who need payment flexibility

Need a second chance at rebuilding your credit? This no-annual fee card from Capital One is a great option.

After applying, you’ll be asked to make a security deposit of $49, $99 or $200 based on your creditworthiness. This amount will be refunded to you if you close your account and pay your balances in full. In return, you’ll get an initial line of credit of $200. If you make your first five monthly payments on time, you’ll get access to a higher credit line, though the maximum is $1,000.

Capital One also allows users to pay their security deposit over time. Once you are approved for the Capital One® Secured Mastercard®, you are allowed to make partial payments toward the deposit, although you have to make the full payment within 80 days.

One feature is ideal for those who are living paycheck-to-paycheck. You can pick your own monthly due date and payment method (by check, online or at a local branch).

The APR with this card is standard for secured cards at 26.49% (variable). There is no penalty APR, but there is a late payment fee of up to $39. The card also offers no foreign transaction fees.

Best for: Earning cash back rewards

This card is highly unusual in one respect: it’s a secured card that allows users a chance to earn rewards. With Discover it® Secured card,  you’ll earn 2% cash back on purchases at gas stations and restaurants, up to $1,000 each quarter. You’ll also earn 1% cash back on everything else you buy with it. Better still, Discover will match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of the first year of using the card.

The refundable security deposit required for this card starts at $200 after approval, and your initial credit limit is equal to your deposit. Your maximum credit limit, which can go up to $2,500, is determined by your “income and ability to pay.”

You can get your security deposit back if you close your account and pay your balance in full. Discover also automatically reviews your account monthly, starting after eight months, to decide if it can safely return your security deposit while you continue to use the card.

This card also comes with no annual fee and a standard APR of 24.74% (Variable). There is no penalty APR, but there is a late payment fee of up to $39 after the second time you pay late.

Best for: A low APR

For a secured credit card, the Green Dot Platinum Visa has one of the lowest APRs around at 19.99%, but it does charge a $39 annual fee.

Like other secured cards, the amount of money you give in as a security deposit corresponds to your credit limit, which the bank has to approve. Credit limits can range from $200 to $1,000.

If you want to use your card immediately, you can make your security deposit with cash at certain retail stores, such as Walmart, CVS and Walgreens. However, a $4.95 fee applies with this option. Alternately, you can mail the deposit in to Green Dot for no extra charge.

Upon closing your account, you will get your security deposit back if you’ve paid your balance in full.

Unfortunately, the $39 annual fee associated with this card is assessed before you begin using your card, and reduces the amount of initial credit you have available. For example, if your credit limit was assigned at $200, and you mailed in your $200, you would only have $161 in available credit after the fee.

There is no late APR associated with this card, only late payment and returned payment fees of up to $27. You can use this card abroad, but there is a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Best for: A higher minimum line of credit

While not as good as Discover’s, the rewards this credit card offers are rare for one aimed at those with low credit scores.

Based on your creditworthiness, you will be able to qualify for one of the four following cash back rewards programs, which award you statement credit:

  • 1% cash back on eligible gas, groceries, mobile phone service, internet service, dining, and cable and satellite TV services purchases
  • 1% cash back on eligible dining purchases

This card charges APRs of 19.99% to 25.99%, based on your creditworthiness. However, there may be an annual fee with this card: $0 to $75 for the first year and $0 to $99 after that. This is also based on creditworthiness, meaning that if your credit score improves, you may not have to pay an annual fee.

As with the Green Dot card, the annual fee will reduce the amount of credit you initially have. For some accounts, the annual fee will be billed each month after the second year. For others, it may be billed annually each year after the second year.

There is no penalty APR, but there are late payment and returned payment fees of up to $38. The foreign transaction fee on this card is either $1 or 3% of each purchase in U.S. dollars, whichever is greater.

This card offers free, monthly access to your Experian credit score, based on the Experian ScoreX (a scoring model that Credit One does not actually use to evaluate applicants for its credit card).

Best for: No initial fees

Unlike many unsecured credit cards for those with bad credit, the Indigo Platinum card doesn’t charge any upfront or processing fees. With it, users will be offered one of three annual fee structures (each with a 24.9% APR):

  • No annual fee
  • A $59 annual fee
  • A $75 annual fee for the first year and $99 for each year after

Again, the annual fee will reduce the amount of credit you initially have. The foreign transaction fee associated with this card is one of the lowest at 1%. However, there is a penalty APR of 29.9%, as well as late payment, over limit and returned payment fees of up to $39 each.

Though there aren’t many extra features associated with this card, it’s easy to qualify and pre-qualification is quick. Best of all, no security deposit is needed.
