Lapras Is Now the Official Pokémon of Miyagi Prefecture

Boat and float around with the help of the sea Pokémon

It's becoming a trend for prefectures in Japan to pick "support" Pokémon — for example, Iwate Prefecture's adoption of Geodude. Miyagi Prefecture is next in line, naming the sea Pokémon Lapras their official Poké-mascot.

The campaign, which plans to use Lapras to help visitors experience the sights of Miyagi, kicks off officially this October. However, the hype is alerady beginning as the region shows off their own big, cuddly Pokémon mascot. It may not have wild legs like Iwate's Geodude, but we're here for it.

The sea Pokémon was a natural choice for Miyagi, whose lakes and islands are a major part of its appeal to tourists. To help visitors get even closer to the area's natural wonders, Lapras-style paddle boats will be available for rental at Michinoku Park and the National Hanayama Youth Center. Pools and hotels in the region will also have grownup-sized Laplace floaties:

More information will become available closer to the launch of the campaign, which is due to run from October to March.
