A new force in SA gaming has emerged!

23 April 2014, 11:57

The Wits Wargames Club was started back in 1979, and since then it seemed as though the Wits Club would remain the dominant force in gaming in South Africa.

Even though many of the gamers who started at Wits never earned Protea Colours while studying at the University, the club proved to be a hghly successful breeding ground of talent.

Consequently, many of the Wits graduates went on to 'earn their spurs' and represent South Africa after leaving the hallowed halls of learning.

One just has to remember the wargaming greats that South Africa produced like Dr Evgenii Rabiner, Pavel Rabiner, Richard Gordon and the like who all blossomed into great gamers only after they left Wits.

However, the University also has more than its fair share of gamers who have earned Provincial, National, and protea Colours while still at Wits. Since 2000, the University has produced no less than five gamers who have earned Protea Colours and has produced highly dedicated individuals capable of holding down senior management and Executive roles.

Thus Wits has set the standard for all the other clubs, and although the University of Johannesburg (UJ) briefly attempted to challenge Wit's position of absolute authority, UJ was just not able to sustain its challenge.

But that may now all be about to change....

A new force in gaming is emerging.

A mind sports club has been established at Tuks (University of Pretoria), and it has started with a bang.

The highly ambitious and enthusiastic committee lead by Mornè Snyman has put together teams that have shaken the established teams and clubs to the core.

The Tuks teams have in a very short period of time shown just what they are made of and at the MWEB 31st Gauteng Provincial LAN Championships took 1st and 2nd place in the League of Legends as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Dota 2 game. Ruan van Staden (Tuks – TMSC) then went on to take first place in Tekken Tag Tournament II.

As if that were not enough!

The Tuks club then took 2nd and 3rd place in the annual MWEB On-line Dota 2 Championships.

Wits has yet to pick up a medal this year....

So with only three of the fifteen major championships out of the way, it seems as though it is going to be a hard year for every other club as Tuks seems absolutely determined to stamp its authority on the South African gaming scene.
