Synopsis

An adaptation of the New Mutants comic books, this X-Men cinematic universe installment follows five new mutants who are held in a secret facility against their will. Together, they must fight the dangers of their powers and deal with their troubled pasts, if they are to save themselves.

A new breed of X-Men heroes will make their debut on the big screen soon with the movie adaptation of The New Mutants. The film will follow the story of five young mutants who are kept in a secret facility just as they are discovering their abilities. They will have to work together to free themselves, while battling conflicts among themselves and within themselves.

The movie is set to premiere in April 2018 and will feature mutants Magik/Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane/Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), Cannonball/Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), Sunspot/Roberta da Costa (Henry Zaga), Mirage/Danielle Monstar (Blu Hunt) and Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga).

Director Josh Boone himself wrote co-wrote the screenplay with his friend Knate Lee. They are both fans of the comic series. They started working on the film concept right after Boone finished working on his blockbuster film, The Fault in Our Stars. After creating a comic book inspired by Chris Claremont’s work, they presented their idea for a trilogy to X-Men producer Simon Kinberg. In May 2015, Fox inked a deal with Boone to direct the standalone X-Men films spinoff based on the screenplay they made.

Filming for The New Mutants started on July 10, 2017 under the working title Growing Pains, in Boston. It is revealed that the film will have a full-fledged horror movie style, which is unlike previous X-Men films. Boone further revealed that there will be no costumes and no super-villains. Instead, the lead characters are going up against a psychic monster known as the Demon Bear who is connected to Mirage.

Filming wrapped up in September with the director and the cast posting photos of the milestone in their social media accounts.
