Daniel Licht, ‘Dexter,’ ‘Children of the Corn’ Composer, Dies at 60

6 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Daniel Licht, composer for TV’s “Dexter,” died of cancer late Wednesday. He was 60.

Licht scored all eight seasons of “Dexter,” the Showtime serial-killer drama, from 2006 to 2013. Although he also wrote music for movies and other TV projects, it was his quirky music for “Dexter” – employing unusual sounds using bones, knives, scissors, duct tape, wine glasses, didgeridoo, Irish harp and other instruments – that became his best-known work.

Seven albums of “Dexter” music, all featuring his scores, were released. Licht himself played many of the percussion instruments in a 10-minute orchestral suite of “Dexter” music performed live at Poland’s Krakow Film Music Festival in 2015. »

‘What Would Diplo Do?’ Review: Delightful Viceland Comedy Drops Sick Beats Along With the Silly and Strange

8 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

One of the highest compliments you can pay to a TV show is this: It knows exactly what kind of show it is. And that’s very much the case for “What Would Diplo Do?” the new Viceland scripted comedy showrun by and starring James Van Der Beek.

What is a Diplo? You don’t necessarily need to know the answer to enjoy the series, directed by Brandon Dermer and starring Van Der Beek as a world-famous DJ who travels the world with an eclectic crew of characters performing sick concerts and getting into hijinks. But the answer is that Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz) is a real Edm artist who (theoretically) is nothing at all like Van Der Beek’s portrayal. And that fact is part of what makes the series work so well, as Van Der Beek pushes his character portrait beyond simple caricature into the most out-there realms. »

Nashville Recap: Hashtag Stressed

8 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Need to catch up? Check out the previous Nashville recap here.

Are you there, Luke Wheeler? It’s me, a troubled Nashville enthusiast.

Before you say anything, yes. I was one of the people routinely calling you out as a ridiculous corporate whore who’d slap his name on anything for the right price. Yes, I often mocked you for talking about your “brand” and “Luke Wheeler Worldwide” (whatever that was) and all of that ridiculousness.

But now I see the terrible truth of it all: You above anyone else in Music City could’ve helped avert the crisis that »

Steve Harvey Defends Staff Memo Scandal While Promoting New Daytime Show: ‘I’m Not a Mean-Spirited Guy’

10 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Steve Harvey found himself in hot water a few months ago when a harsh memo that he had sent his staff was leaked and went viral.

The staff memo in question — in which he wrote, “Do not come to my dressing room unless invited….Do not approach me while I’m in the makeup chair unless I ask to speak with you directly” — was leaked by a staff member from Harvey’s Chicago-based talk show who did not get a job on his new daytime show “Steve,” which shoots in Los Angeles and debuts this fall in national syndication.

In anticipation to the premiere of “Steve,” Harvey sat down with reporters on Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., during which he was immediately asked about the staff memo scandal.

“I learned two things from that email…I can’t write and I should never write,” Harvey »

‘Little Mermaid’ Live Postponed by ABC

10 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC has postponed its live-musical version of “The Little Mermaid.”

The live production of the Broadway musical based on the classic Disney animated film had been scheduled for Oct. 3. No new premiere date has been set.

“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special,” an ABC spokesperson said in a statement. “We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves.”

“The Little Mermaid” was set to be ABC’s entry in the live-musical broadcast trend that was kicked off by NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live” in 2013, and which Fox inserted itself into with “Grease Live.”

ABC announced in May that it would mount a live version of “The Little Mermaid.” “We really wanted to be in the game as well, and »

Taken Mystery Solved: Find Out Why NBC Cut 6 Cast Members

10 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Call it Taken: Take Deux.

Back in June, TVLine broke the news that NBC pink-slipped six series regulars in the wake of the action-drama’s down-to-the-wire Season 2 pickup. The network also made a showrunner switch, tapping Person of Interest Ep Greg Plageman to replace Season 1 boss Alex Cary

Per NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt, the drastic overhaul stemmed from a belief that Taken “needed” a creative reboot. “There’s a better show in there,” the exec tells TVLine, noting that the “essence” of the series — leads Clive Standen (Bryan Mills) and Jennifer Beals (Christina Hart) — will remain in Season 2. “We love Clive and Jennifer, »

James Van Der Beek Dashes Our Dawson's Creek Reunion Hopes, Talks Viceland's What Would Diplo Do?

10 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

C’mon, I had to ask.

When James Van Der Beek came by TVLine’s Comic-Con suite, we spent the bulk of his interview talking about his bizarre new Viceland comedy, What Would Diplo Do? Van Der Beek stars (and writes, and produces, and serves as showrunner) in the series (Thursdays, 10/9c), in which he plays real-life electronic dance music DJ Diplo.

Diplo also executive-produces the series, which portrays him as a musical genius who’s kind of an oblivious jackass, and it’s a whole meta thing that Van Der Beek explains in the video much better than I’m doing here. »
