Daniel Licht, ‘Dexter,’ ‘Children of the Corn’ Composer, Dies at 60

6 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Daniel Licht, composer for TV’s “Dexter,” died of cancer late Wednesday. He was 60.

Licht scored all eight seasons of “Dexter,” the Showtime serial-killer drama, from 2006 to 2013. Although he also wrote music for movies and other TV projects, it was his quirky music for “Dexter” – employing unusual sounds using bones, knives, scissors, duct tape, wine glasses, didgeridoo, Irish harp and other instruments – that became his best-known work.

Seven albums of “Dexter” music, all featuring his scores, were released. Licht himself played many of the percussion instruments in a 10-minute orchestral suite of “Dexter” music performed live at Poland’s Krakow Film Music Festival in 2015. »

'Dark Tower' Looks to Top Slow Weekend as Summer Slump Continues

14 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Around this time last year Suicide Squad debuted to the tune of $133.6 million and gave the 2016 summer movie season a much-needed jolt. This year the summer movie season is in the midst of a slump, off nearly 9% compared to last year and don't expect this weekend to turn things around. Sony's adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower should top the box office, but only with an opening around $20 million while fellow new wide release Kidnap appears unlikely to crack double digits. Meanwhile, Annapurna will deliver Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit nationwide following its limited release last weekend as it looks for a spot in the weekend top five among the holdovers. Back in 2010, Universal set a 2013 release date for The Dark Tower. At the time, Ron Howard was set to direct the Stephen King adaptation and there was talk of telling King's sci-fi fantasy story across both film and television. »

Film Review: ‘Savage Dog’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Martin Tillman, the burly bruiser played by British action star Scott Adkins in “Savage Dog,” most assuredly is a man on a mission. But it’s not always clear precisely what that mission is in writer-director Jesse V. Johnson’s ultra-violent revenge melodrama set in 1959 Indochina. At times, it seems that Tillman’s overriding objective is to destroy the undesirables who killed his buddy, shot his girlfriend and generally made life unpleasant for him during and after his stint in a prison operated by an unrepentant ex-Nazi. But at other times — many more times, actually — his primary goal appears to be surpassing the massive body count of “Universal Solider: Day of Reckoning,” Adkins’ 2012 starring-role breakthrough. Spoiler: He is extremely successful in both pursuits.

When we first meet Tillman, he is rising from the rain-soaked earth, not unlike Tim Robbins in “The Shawshank Redemption,” after being dumped into a shallow grave by bad guys who made the fatal »

Eurimages Chief Roberto Olla on How a Netflix Acquisition Can be ‘Kiss of Death’ For a European Art Film (Exclusive)

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Roberto Olla, executive director of the Council of Europe’s Eurimages co-production fund, is concerned that as Netflix starts acquiring Eurimages-supported European art films, the type of global deals the streaming giant is doing can force these films to largely bypass theatrical and festival circuits, which are an integral part of Eurimages’ raison d’être. He spoke to Variety during the Locarno Film Festival’s StepIn Initiative, the prime European forum where the disruptive effect of global streaming platforms on the indie film industry is being discussed.

How is Netflix impacting what Eurimages does?

What we are seeing at Eurimages — and I think everyone is seeing this — is that producers are increasingly finding themselves in a bind. Let me describe it with  the following scenario: They’ve had their project co-financed; the film has been released theatrically in the territory of the majority co-producer but is struggling to get released in the minority co-producer’s territory and »

A group of roughly 60 prominent European independent film industry execs assembled Thursday at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland to thrash out some of the pressing issues they are facing as they scramble to contend with the disruptive effect of giant global streaming platforms. Following the recent controversy in Cannes over Netflix’s stringent theatrical release policy, Locarno’s StepIn think tank provided a forum to take the discussion to a more constructive level. StepIn also offered a glimpse into future developments of a complex, constantly evolving scenario. These are five takeaways that surfaced, most of which about Netflix, which dominated the conversation, though no Netflix exec attended.

1) Apple is joining the fray.

“We are certainly seeing Apple coming in [as a buyer] at the documentary level,” said Focus Features president Robert Walak, who was one of the keynote speakers. “It will be interesting to see what will happen at the Toronto Film Festival; whether Apple will come on board as »
