Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and major studios are expected to return to the bargaining table Saturday for a rare weekend session as the sides try to head off a strike that could begin as early as May 2.

The contract wrangling is expected to go down to the wire on Monday night when the current contract expires. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and WGA have been in talks since Tuesday, but there’s speculation that both sides are watching the clock and holding back on their final moves until Monday.

One source said that as of Friday evening the AMPTP was still awaiting a formal response from the WGA on key points in the talks, including residual rates and script fees for Svod programs and the “span” issue involving adjustments in compensation for short-order series that has been a central concern in the negotiations.

Scientists Are Calling for NY Times Boycott Over Op-Ed by ‘Climate Change Denier’

Multiple scientists and climate change advocates are calling for a boycott of The New York Times after an op-ed that they felt pushed anti-climate change agendas. The Friday column, the first written by Bret Stephens for the publication, uses the argument that data doesn’t always convey reality to make the point that climate change isn’t definite, despite evidence that supports the claim. He refers partially to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential run, chronicled in the recent book “Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign.” Authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes wrote that the campaign relied too much on data, »

Universal Pictures has moved up its untitled “Doctor Dolittle” pic from May 24, 2019 to Apr. 12, 2019. The move is likely being made to avoid “Star Wars: Episode IX”, which Disney recently announced would also be opening that weekend.

The film will be produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under their Roth/Kirschenbaum Films (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Maleficent”), along with Susan Downey (“Sherlock Holmes” films, “The Judge”) for Team Downey. Gaghan wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay from an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd.
