Elsevier is an academic publishing company that publishes medical and scientific literature, as a "provider of information solutions that enhance the performance of science, health, and technology professionals, empowering them to make better decisions, deliver better care, and sometimes make groundbreaking discoveries that advance the boundaries of knowledge and human progress. Elsevier provides web-based, digital solutions—among them ScienceDirect, Scopus, Elsevier Research Intelligence and ClinicalKey—and publishes nearly 2,200 journals, including The Lancet and Cell, and over 25,000 book titles."

Elsevier has donated ScienceDirect access. ScienceDirect is their full-text database with "almost a quarter of the world's peer-reviewed scientific content". The database includes over 2,500 journals, 900 serials and 26,000 book titles. Journals include, among others, The Lancet, Cell, Current Biology, Biomaterials, Biological Psychiatry, Social Science & Medicine, Current Biology, Cognition, and Behavioural Brain Research. Wikipedia Library access

Elsevier is offering free accounts to its published content online on ScienceDirect to help write Wikipedia content in a great variety of topics, from health to astronomy. To facilitate verification in more specific areas of the encyclopedia, the accounts have been split across three access collections:

• Health & Life Sciences (See the included journals, books,^{[dead link]} incl. includes reference modules in Chemistry and reference modules in Biomedical Sciences.)
• Social & Behavioral Sciences (see the included journals and books^{[dead link]})
• Physical Sciences (see the included journals and books^{[dead link]} incl. reference module in Chemistry and reference module in Earth Systems))

Wikipedia editors may apply for one of these ScienceDirect access collections according to their area of specialty; their account will be valid for a period of one year.

Requirements[edit]

• You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
• You have an account that is a minimum of 6 months old
• You have a minimum of 500 edits to the encyclopedia
• You do not already have access to this resource through another library or institution

Expectations[edit]

Finding open Elsevier content

In addition to subscription content, Elsevier also has some material that is open for anyone to read. Here's how to find it: • Browse the list of open-access journals • Find a list of all journals that have open-access articles on the ScienceDirect homepage by clicking "View all publications with Open Access articles" • Look for the "Open Access" label on the search results page • Using the advanced search, check the box that says "Open access articles only" • Look for the orange "Open Access" label on an article's abstract page • From the page of a journal that supports open access, click on the open-access article link on the left-hand sidebar to see the open-access articles published by the journal

Approved editors may:

• Search, view and download content from ScienceDirect and must follow scholarly and/or Wikipedia best practices when using those sources for their work (see below for the Wikipedia-specific guidelines).
• Print, download and store individual items (e.g., articles, abstracts, chapters) for such user's exclusive use.
• Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of ScienceDirect website they are accessing.
• Store individual journal articles from the content in the private library of a social networking site for the approved editor’s own personal use only.
• Share individual items with a limited number of third party colleagues as part of an invitation only working group on a social networking site for personal, scholarly or research use that works with publishers to provide anonymized usage information.

Note: ScienceDirect includes Open Access content. Open Access content generally has broader license restriction that vary depending on the applicable end user license. More information about Elsevier licenses can be found here. Open Access and Open Archive articles can be identified from the Open Archive or Open Access indications just above the abstract or summary in the online version of the article.

Approved editors will not

• Share their account logins or passwords with others, or sell their access to other parties
• Mass scrape or mass download content on ScienceDirect
• Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
• Mine data or content without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
• Display any copyrighted images or pictures which are in Elsevier works without permission of Elsevier
• Use the access provided for any commercial purpose

Private and confidential information

• By applying to the Program, you understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, The Wikipedia Library, and Elsevier ScienceDirect. Wikipedia Library organizers contracted under the Wikimedia Foundation will abide by the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy and associated confidentiality agreements. Volunteer representatives of the Wikipedia Library are neither employees nor contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation (or Elsevier ScienceDirect), but they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

Note that citation styles vary by article; editors can use the style most appropriate to the articles they are working with so long as the citations are complete.

Applications[edit]

What to expect with TWL account processing
	Make sure to read this before sending emails to account coordinators inquiring about your account status. Our current average account distribution cycle (from sign up to account access), is 27 days. We are working on improving this. Step 1: Application screening We will begin screening applicants within a few weeks of opening applications, usually as the number of applications approaches or exceeds the number of accounts available. At that time the account coordinator will place an {{Approved}} ( Approved), {{Unapproved}} ( Not approved)or {{ToBeDone}} ( Pending or waitlisted) status to your account. If you signed up after the initial call for applicants, process may not happen immediately if accounts are not available. Step 2: Email and Google Form After you have received approval for an account, you will be contacted via a Wikipedia email from the account coordinator; be sure to check your spam folder. The email will contain instructions for filling out a Google form with the required information for access. Step 3: Waiting for partners to activate accounts There are several steps of subsequent processing, including waiting for a batch of users to submit information, emailing partners, and waiting for partners to activate accounts. Expect this process to take as long as two weeks; we try to make it take less time, but there are a lot of variables at play. Step 4: Using access Once the account is activated either the volunteer coordinator or the partner will send you an email with access information. Follow the given instructions, and make sure to actively use your access to improve Wikipedia content! Changes coming soon We recognize this process can be frustrating and take a while: we think so too. We are in the process of developing a digital tool to make this process more user friendly and make it easier for us to give you access to partners. Add yourself at the bottom of the list with a line starting with #{{user8|USERNAME|Project=code}} (eg. #{{user8|Example|Project=en}}) followed by an explanation of why you believe the access would be beneficial to you. Make sure to describe which access option you would prefer. It is a good idea to include in your application text: your depth of experience with Wikipedia and other WM projects, your editing areas benefited by access, and examples of your commitment to content creation. Editors may request access to more than one stream but because of limited availability, only one stream will likely be provided.

My contributions are mostly in History of Technology and Science, including also the biographies related to this general topic. I created a lot of new pages, mostly in italian, but I love to add referencies to the already-existing pages also. I am active in Wikipedia since 2005, covering italian/german/english wikpedia (in Germany I go regularly to the local group meetings). I am currently working on some themes relating Computer Linguistics (on this topic, I peer-reviewed a paper but currently having no access to Elsevier), History of Computing and Telecomunication and their applications in real life (they are a lot!) from an historical point of view. I took a course at the University about History of Technology under professor Vittorio Marchis in Turin, receiving the highest mark. I do a lot of destub work at WP:MICRO and oftentimes I can only use the abstracts of Elsevier resources, so I would really appreciate this subscription. I've been registered since May but I started editing heavily in October of this year. In addition to Wikipedia, I'm in the top 10% of the English Wiktionary users by edits.
