The Road Movie” is a compilation of video footage shot exclusively via dashboard cameras in Russian automobiles, capturing a comet crashing down to Earth, a forest fire, and angry motorists taking road rage to wholly new and unexpected levels. The footage is often accompanied by bemused commentary from unseen and often stoic drivers and passengers.

“It’s fun,” said Oscilloscope chief Dan Berger. “It’s scary. It’s humorous. And there’s a sense of existential dread that pervades the whole thing. Kalashnikov’s ‘The Road Movie »

Ridley Scott Says ‘Alien: Awakening’ Next, Says Four More ‘Alien’ Movies On The Way

39 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Who would’ve thought the worse thing to happen to the “Alien” franchise might be Ridley Scott, himself? The director has returned to the horror series he started, but with each passing day, it seems his more interested in just cranking out installments forever, rather than finally connect the prequels to the original like he initially promised to do. “Prometheus” was a disappointment (even for someone like me who really liked the visceral experience), and sorry, the “more aliens” approach of “Alien: Covenant” doesn’t leave me hopeful (nor do the cornball trailers for the film).

‘Black-ish,’ ‘Insecure,’ and Others Aren’t Just ‘Black Shows,’ As Nielsen Study Proves

48 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As the nation becomes increasingly divided, a small piece of encouraging news comes from, of all places, Nielsen: A new study shows that several programs predominantly African-American casts also boast a large percentage of white viewers.

The new roster of diverse series that have found cross-cultural appeal include ABC’s “Black-ish” and HBO’s “Insecure.” Around 79% of the”Black-ish” audience is non-black, while the “Insecure” audience is 61% non-black.

Black-ish” is a huge hit for ABC: It stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross as parents of a growing family who struggle to create a sense of black identity for their kids while living in a wealthy, predominantly white neighborhood. “Insecure,” created by Issa Rae and inspired by her web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” is about a young African-American woman in Los Angeles, her friendships, and how it’s sometimes hard to make the right decisions.

‘After The Storm’ Review: Hirokazu Kore-eda Only Makes Great Movies, But This Tender Drama Is One of His Best

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Hirokazu Kore-eda first established himself as a major filmmaker with a string of audacious dramas that included a harrowing portrait of modern poverty (“Nobody Knows”) and a transcendent vision of the great beyond (“After Life”). In recent years, however — at least since 2009’s “Air Doll,” a contemporary fairy tale in which Bae Doo-na plays an inflatable sex doll who comes to life — the great Japanese humanist has downshifted towards more openly sentimental slice-of-life stories, churning out low-key masterpieces with such regularity and deceptive effortlessness that it can be easy to take them for granted.

So when Kore-eda unloads another gently brilliant film full of characters so real and full of life that it feels as though could fly to Japan and visit them, it may not seem like much cause for celebration. But when one of those films is just the tiniest bit above his batting average, it’s enough »
