Honest Titles: CollegeHumor Shares Reimagined Parody Posters for 2017 Oscar-Nominated Films

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Continuing their annual tradition, CollegeHumor has released their “Honest Titles” for the 2017 Oscar-nominated films. The full list of nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning, and with that come the satirical reimagined posters of the movies that received this year’s top honors.

La La Land,” Damien Chazelle’s musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, has been an awards seasons darling, earning 14 Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress. The film is known for its tagline “Here’s to the ones who dream,” but CollegeHumor  gives the one-sheet a different take, writing “Here’s to the attractive 20-something white people who dream” and giving it the title: “A Very Specific Demographic of La La Land.”

How will this weekend’s PGA and SAG awards shape the race?

5 hours ago | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Hot on the heels of the Academy Award nominations, this coming Saturday and Sunday will see a pair of guild awards give out their big prizes. Yes, the Producers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild will have their ceremonies, with both acting as huge Oscar precursors. It’s no exaggeration to say that what PGA and SAG does will heavily shape what the Academy does next month. Will they make a La La Land romp into a foregone conclusion? Will they really open the door for a Moonlight upset? What about Manchester by the Sea? Read on to see the possibilities… Below you will see my takes on both precursors, including predictions for what will go down this weekend with each guild. Tomorrow I will have a first set of post nomination Academy Award predictions, though just note that PGA and/or SAG could make those predictions that immediately need to be amended. »

Oscars 2017: How Does August Wilson’s Nomination Fit in With Previous Posthumous Honorees?

There’s a bit of a unique situation happening in the best adapted screenplay category this year. While every single person up for that trophy are first-time nominees, our attention is focused on the one posthumous contender: August Wilson. With the man behind Fences up for a trophy, he becomes the person with the second-biggest gap between their death and a potential Oscar win in history.

The Academy nominated Wilson in the best adapted screenplay category for Fences — directed by Denzel Washington who also starred in the film alongside Viola Davis — along with a talented group. Other nominees include Eric Heisserer for Arrival, Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi for Hidden Figures, Luke Davies for Lion, and Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney for Moonlight. Not only is Wilson the only posthumous nominee here but he is the only »

Michael Rapaport Slams Aziz Ansari For Comparing Trump to Chris Brown in ‘SNL’ Monologue

Aziz Ansari hosted “Saturday Night Live” a day after Donald Trump’s inauguration and poked fun at the 45th president by comparing him to Chris Brown.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of people who voted for Trump the same way a lot of people listen to the music of Chris Brown, where it’s like, ‘Hey, man! I’m just here for the tunes,” Ansari joked. “‘I don’t know about that other stuff. I just like the dancing and the music. I don’t condone the extracurriculars.’”

“The Parks and Recreation” alum was called out by Brown in an Instagram post and was also slammed by actor Michael Rapaport on his latest episode of “I Am Rapaport Stereo Podcast.”

Audience Popularity, Strong Box Office Factor Into PGA Nominees

25 January 2017 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Producers Guild of America has remained a distinctive voice during the Hollywood awards season — often in favor of including popular mainstream movies that might be overlooked otherwise.

That tendency was clearly in evidence on Jan. 10 when the PGA nominated “Deadpool” for its Darryl F. Zanuck Award along with the expected high-brow contenders — “Arrival,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Moonlight.”

Prizes will be handed out during the 28th annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Jan. 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Along with “Lion,” “Deadpool” was the biggest surprise among the nominees. The Ryan Reynolds action-comedy is by far the top grosser among the PGA nominees with $783 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.

Awards trackers theorize that producers are more likely to be impressed with strong box-office performance in honoring a film that won’t go on to »

The Weekend Warrior 1/27/17: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, A Dog’s Purpose, Gold

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

The Truth About This Year's Oscar Diversity

And the award for most improved diversity goes to . . . the 89th Academy Awards! Unlike last year's nominations, which caused many protests and boycotts (as well as the 2015 noms, which sparked #OscarsSoWhite), this year's nominees actually include people of color. The best picture category features diverse films Fences, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight, the latter of which took home the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama. Denzel Washington and Ruth Negga received nominations for best actor and actress in a leading role for their performances in Fences and Loving, respectively. Mahershala Ali and Dev Patel received nominations in the supporting actor category for their respective roles in Moonlight and Lion, while Barry Jenkins makes history as the fourth-ever black nominee in the best director category, for his work on Moonlight. Furthermore, for the first time ever, women of color - Naomie Harris, Octavia Spencer, and Viola Davis (who now holds the »

Numbers. Oscars. Numbers. Oscars...

If you love Oscars too much (*raises hands*) your head can get a little swimmy on Oscar nomination day, trying to parse it all. Particularly the numbers and the new statistics. This could take some time. But here are some non-subjective hierarchies and numbers and stats from the day.

We'll start with the easy one.

Most Nominations

La La Land (14) [tie] Moonlight and Arrival (8) [tie] Hacksaw Ridge and Lion and Manchester by the Sea (6) Fences (4) Hidden Figures and Jackie (3)

Note: Jackie marks the second year in a row wherein a "chilly" gorgeous movie about a complicated woman wins the distinction of "most nominated movie that isn't nominated for Best Picture" -- coincidence? Nope.

5 of past 6 years film w/ most noms that wasn't up for Best Pic was a chilly beauty about complex woman. Coincidence? I think not. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/fRFZXaflsb

Viola Davis Is First Black Actress to Score 3 Oscar Nominations

Awards season is building to its biggest night, with the 89th annual Academy Awards fast approaching. Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their list of nominees for 2017 and they should be able to avoid the same #OscarsSoWhite backlash that was experienced last year. That is in part because Viola Davis was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Fences, which makes her the most nominated black actress in the history of the Academy Awards.

With her latest nomination, Viola Davis has now been nominated for three Academy Awards, marking the first time an African-American actress has ever accomplished that. Win or lose, with the nomination, she has cemented her place in the Oscar history books. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times after the Academy Award Nominations were released this morning, Viola Davis praised Denzel Washington for directing Fences and thanked the Academy. Exclusive: 'Manchester by the Sea' Director Kenneth Lonergan on Mel Gibson and the 'Special' Year of Movies

"It's a very happy day for us."

Director Kenneth Lonergan says it with a slight sigh and a chuckle that betrays just how big of an understatement it is. His movie, Manchester by the Sea, racked up six Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning, including Casey Affleck for Best Actor, Lucas Hedges for Best Supporting Actor and Michelle Williams for Best Supporting Actress, not to mention Best Picture.

"The fact that I got nominated for Best Director is great," Lonergan, who also wrote the film and earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination for it, told Et by phone. "But then, look at Lucas, getting his first nomination! Or Casey, getting the recognition he's getting for this incredible performance. You start trying to say that one is more special than the other and then you just go down the line until you get to Michelle and come back around and it's just all good."

Saturday Night Live” writer Katie Rich has disengaged with Twitter, and if you sift through her mentions right now, that’s probably a good thing.

Rich is under fire this week due to a joke she tweeted from her personal account on Friday during the inauguration of President Trump about his young son Barron, which many considered a clear example of crossing a line within the realm of comedy. She later apologized on Twitter, and was suspended from the “SNL” writing staff. (The New York Times has more info, including the joke itself.)
