24: Legacy 

Based on premiere, huh. It's still 24, that's for sure. Show opens with 3 nearly omnipotent Muslim terrorists wiping out 4 Army Rangers on their own turf. That's the fascinating part of 24: enemies so horrible they're barely real.

But then, all the check boxes will get ticked really quickly...

High-position spy in CTU? Check. Probably not the spy after all, but a guy holding grudges and keeping CTU back for the rest of the season, but someone else actually is a spy? Probably.

CTU HQ being a damp, dark basement with question how analysts don't go blind in this place never got asked? Check.

Generating "4D environment" from 3 cameras? (what) Check.

Computers still not using mice? Check.

Computers that zoom, open files and slides with no input while someone's talking about the same stuff? Check, somewhat.

I'll bet next episodes will have "tapping into trunk lines" and "opening protocols" and all that other dumb techno babble that has no basis in reality. I'm still sad to see that this, very essential part hasn't really matured. Could someone go over and hit producers' face with a laptop?

Moving over large distances in insanely short time? Check. I wouldn't be surprised if all the other tropes are there too, such as:

The initial plot gets resolved and then turns into part of much bigger plot in the mid- season

CTU has actually 2 double agents / CTU gets attacked directly (or hacked)

One of the friendly characters turns into bad one (my bets are on Isaac, protagonist's gangster brother... or her jealous girlfriend) etc

Eh, well. Another essential part of 24 has always been the protagonist. I think "Legacy" is on shaky grounds here too - while Jack Bauer was not only an ex- special forces soldier, he was also a seasoned operative. New lead is not, and his experience, while not explained yet, seems to be very low. So we get a young un' with a gun, doing all kinds of crazy antics involving shooting ropes off sewer pipes and running into three gunmen or having prolonged debates with ex-colleague while said gunmen are basically next to him.

It's fresh, but not quite 24. Then again, I'd not rather see poor Jack Bauer suffer through another season of torture, beating, pain of loss, and endless betrayal by both friends and enemies. So all that's left to see is how quickly new kid picks up the trade.

So far, it's classic 24, but all the horrible faults and tropes are still there, too. I wonder how many seasons it takes to clean them up.
