Shyamalan's 'Split' and Diesel's 'xXx 3' Look to Deliver $20+ Million Openings

8 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

While last weekend's new releases failed to energize the box office, two of this week's new titles will top the weekend chart. M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller, Split, and the return of Vin Diesel in the title role of xXx: Return of Xander Cage are both looking to score $20+ million openings while Hidden Figures and La La Land look to continue to capture audience attention amid their already-strong domestic runs. Additionally, this weekend features the release of The Founder into just over one thousand theaters and High Top releasing brings The Resurrection of Gavin Stone into 887 theaters as it hopes to attract the attention of the faith-based audience. At the top of the weekend box office expect to find M. Night Shyamalan's Split. Shyamalan's career has featured plenty of ups and downs, but following the performance of The Visit in 2015 and the solid early reviews for Split, we »

Dwayne Johnson's DC Villain Black Adam Getting His Own Movie

10 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

New Line and DC Entertainment are doubling down on comic book hero Shazam!

New Line, which has been for over a decade developing a movie on the long-time DC character, will develop concurrently a movie centering on Black Adam, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star as Shazam’s arch-nemesis.

The move stems from last week’s high level meeting with Johnson and DC Films co-head and comics author Geoff Johns, after which Johnson took to social media to promise “hope, optimism & fun.”

But on a deeper level, the meeting led to a reconfiguring of the Shazam! movie. Johnson has been »

Excellent ‘Split’ Twist Gives Off Vibe of Early Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies (Commentary)

45 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

(It probably should be expected that there will be major spoiler for “Split” and other M. Night Shyamalan movies below. So here’s your spoiler alert.) M. Night Shyamalan movies have it tough. Almost all of them feature an attempt at a hard-hitting twist, and with the massive success of “The Sixth Sense” right out of the gate, the bar for those twists has been set pretty high. When a movie’s twist fails to clear that bar, viewers and critics aren’t too kind about it. Several Shyamalan movies, such as “The Village” or “Lady in the Water,” are met with disdain for their. »

On ‘The Good Place’ Twist and a Strong Finish to a Fine First Season

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Don’t read on unless you’ve seen “Michael’s Gambit,” the Season One finale of “The Good Place.”

Who knew we were going to get two versions of “Westworld” — one comedic, the other dramatic — in the past five months? Peak TV, you secretive minx, you.

The parallels between “The Good Place” and the HBO show were strong even before the arrival of the episode that ended the season. The train that serviced Eleanor and Chidi’s town was an old-timey engine that could have had a walk-on (rail-on?) role in “Westworld,” and in Thursday’s other episode, “Mindy St. Claire,” the train chugged through a dusty desert only to pull up at a station framed by wide open spaces. Whenever Eleanor was sitting on those wooden benches inside the train, I half-expected Teddy to amble up to her and say “Howdy, ma’am.” (And speaking of HBO Westerns, true TV nerds will remember that Kristen Bell had »

Stephen Colbert Brings Back Conservative Alter Ego to Bid Farewell to Obama, Usher in Trump (Video)

The real Stephen Colbert struggled to find a way to talk about the “scope of Barack Obama’s legacy” on Thursday night, hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration — so he turned to an old friend to help him out. Sundance Film Review: ‘An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It might be the understatement of the millennium to say that Donald Trump is not about to do the issue of climate change (or those who care about it) any great favors. Yet Trump’s ascendance could wind up doing a very big favor for “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” Al Gore’s winning and impassioned, stirring and proudly wonkish follow-up to “An Inconvenient Truth.” If Hillary Clinton were about to be inaugurated as president, then “An Inconvenient Sequel” would still be highly worth seeing, but the movie, which premiered tonight at Sundance to a justly enthusiastic audience, has now been given the kind of shot in the arm that only a seething enemy can provide.

A decade ago, when “An Inconvenient Truth” made its own splash at Sundance (and was picked up by Paramount, a deal that proved instrumental in turning it into a phenomenon), the film »

'An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power': Film Review | Sundance 2017

2 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

There are two things wrong with the title of An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk's follow-up to the 2006 Al Gore climate-change doc. One, the moniker's silly first half lacks the original's gravitas — though this fine film is a match for the first — and will inspire eye-rolling among the unconverted. More important, its second half suggests the doc will address a question that surely keeps Gore, and millions of people worldwide, up at night: What happens when the powerful — for instance, the man who will be America's president hours from this »

Jim Gianopulos in Early Talks With Wanda for Legendary Post

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Former Fox Film chief Jim Gianopulos is in preliminary talks with China’s Dalian Wanda Group to run and expand its Legendary Pictures, according to two sources close to the executive.

The discussions with Wanda honcho Jack Gao, whom Gianopulos has known for years, are in the very early stages, the sources said. Many key issues have not even been discussed at this point, including Gianopulos’ compensation, an actual business plan, and how much Wanda is willing to invest in building Legendary into a full-fledged studio. Wanda has said in the past that it plans to invest billions of dollars into Hollywood assets.

Legendary is in search of a new leader to succeed Thomas Tull, who two days ago announced his departure as chairman and CEO from the company he founded in 2005, then sold it to Wanda last year for $3.5 billion. Legendary disclosed in a regulatory filing last May that »

‘Black-ish’ Spinoff in the Works at ABC

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Johnson family may soon be taking up more airtime on ABC.

The network is considering a spin-off of its hit comedy “Black-ish,” Variety has confirmed. The spin-off, which would star Yara Shahidi, would focus on her character, oldest daughter Zoey Johnson, in college. The spinoff, which is in very early stages, would be introduced as a backdoor pilot this spring. Sources stress that this is early development and nothing has been officially ordered yet.

The series is being developed by “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris. For Barris, the development marks yet another project on the mega-producer’s resume. The “Black-ish” creator is looking toward a fruitful 2017-2018 television season, as he has two more hot projects in the works at ABC. Aside from this spinoff, he’s already nabbed an early pilot order for a new comedy, “Libby & Malcolm,” starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B.
