'Suicide Squad' and 'Sausage Party' Look to Take Down Newcomers, 'Kubo', 'War Dogs' & 'Ben-Hur'

2 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Three new wide releases are hitting theaters this weekend with Focus Features' and Laika's stop-motion animated project Kubo and the Two Strings serving as the widest debut of the lot. Fellow openers include Warner Bros' War Dogs and Paramount's Ben-Hur, though none of this weekend's new releases are likely to find themselves atop the box office. The DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad is looking to threepeat as the weekend's #1 film while Sony's R-rated animated feature Sausage Party hopes to hold off Kubo for a second weekend in the runner-up position. Overall this weekend should be yet another improvement over the same weekend last year with the top twelve pulling in around $120 million altogether. Before we get to the weekend's new releases we'll begin with a couple of carryovers, starting with Suicide Squad, which, along with 19 other wide release films in 2016, dropped over 60% in its second weekend. Of those 20 films, »

‘Big Lebowski’ Spinoff ‘Going Places’ Already Shooting, with John Turturro Directing and Starring as The Jesus

17 August 2016 12:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Remember how John Turturro has been wanting to make a spinoff to “The Big Lebowski” centered around his character The Jesus for years now? Well, it turns out he’s already a few weeks into production on the project, which once carried the working title of “100 Minutes with Jesus” but is now known as “Going Places.” Birth.Movies.Death. first reported the news.

Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou and Susan Sarandon all feature in the film as well, with an off-color premise inspired by Bertrand Blier’s 1974 “Les valseuses.” Cannavale stars opposite Turturro as a fellow thief named Petey, with the two vying to give a woman (Tautou) her first orgasm; Sarandon completes the foursome as a criminal recently released from prison. That certainly sounds like something the Jesus would do, though Tautou might be a little old for him. »

‘Clue’ Remake From Hasbro Lands at Fox

17 August 2016 3:28 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox has come on board Hasbro Studios’ “Clue” movie, five years after the board game-based project was ditched at Universal.

Josh Feldman, the head of Hasbro’s TV and film division, is producing for Hasbro Studios. Daria Cercek is overseeing for Fox.

Hasbro launched development of a “Clue” movie in 2008 as part of a six-year partnership with Universal to produce at least four feature films based on branded properties: Clue, Monopoly, Candyland, Ouija, Battleship, Magic: The Gathering and Stretch Armstrong.

“Battleship” was a costly money-loser for the studio in 2012 while “Ouija” grossed $103 million on a $5 million budget and generated a sequel “Ouija: Origin of Evil” that’s due out Oct. 21. At the time that Universal dropped the “Clue” project, “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski was attached to direct and produce, but is no longer part of the project at Fox.

‘Batman’ Films Remain Top DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sellers

A dearth of new releases kept two Warner Bros. superhero films at the top of the national home video sales charts for the week ended Aug. 14.

Warner’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” remained at No. 1 on Npd VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart for the fourth consecutive week, with “Batman: The Killing Joke,” from Warner Bros. Animation, the 26th film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, remaining at No. 2 for the second week.

The two films also finished in the same positions on the Blu-ray Disc-only chart, a reversal of the prior week, when “Batman: The Killing Joke” debuted at No. 1.

On both charts, Walt Disney Studios’ “Zootopia” came in at No. 3.

On the overall disc sales chart, 20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool” shot back up to No. 4 from No. 10 the previous week, while the No. 5 spot went to the newly issued cartoon “Scooby-Doo! and WWE: »

Viacom Board to Meet Thursday on Settlement That Could Oust CEO Philippe Dauman

54 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Viacom’s board of directors will meet Thursday night to discuss settling a series of lawsuits over control of the media conglomerate — deliberations that could lead to the departure of CEO Philippe Dauman.

Settlement talks between Viacom and controlling shareholder Sumner Redstone and other parties have intensified in recent days in anticipation of a Sept. 19 trial over control of the corporation.

Reuters reported that the Viacom board would meet to discuss a settlement ahead of the trial, though the news service also reported that the date of the board meeting was not firm. Those talking about the settlement talks have chosen to remain anonymous because the discussions are confidential.

Variety and other news outlets previously reported that Dauman could receive a severance package of $85 million. A likely replacement as interim CEO is the company’s chief operating officer, Thomas Dooley.

Viacom did not respond immediately to a request for comment. »

‘Voyage of Time’: How Terrence Malick Made His Documentary About the Birth of the Stars and the Future of Mankind

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

News of a new Terrence Malick movie inspires a fervor among cinephiles like few others, in part because they used to be so rare: Malick made just five films between 1973 and 2011. He’s about to release his third since then, and The Film Stage has quite the rundown of its origins. “Voyage of Time” will soon screen at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals before coming to IMAX in October, which means there’s still plenty of time to obsess over the making of this nonfiction companion to “The Tree of Life” about the birth of the stars and the future of mankind.

The film will screen in two different formats: “Life’s Journey” is 90 minutes long and narrated by Cate Blanchett, while “The IMAX Experience” clocks in at 40 minutes and will be accompanied by the dulcet tones of Brad Pitt. The former’s voiceover is said to be “more searching and poignant, »

Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods review – a funny-eccentric small triumph

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The latest Asterix is a distinctive, energised 3D animation, redubbed by British comic talent including Matt Berry, Jim Broadbent, and Dick and Dom

The French rework Goscinny and Uderzo at the same rate we do Dickens and Shakespeare. This here is not one of those Depardieu-as-Obelix live-action pantos. Rather, a distinctive, energised 3D animation, redubbed by a smattering of British comic talent.

The Gauls’ resistance against a looming Roman housing development allows writer-director Alexandre Astier to mock the processes of gentrification, while razzing all those recent Euro toons trying so desperately to be American. Where others have plumped for generic action, Astier’s preference is for bathetic pauses and funny-eccentric jokes of scale. Even the English-language version’s vocal ensemble (Matt Berry, Dick and Dom, Jim Broadbent) proves a small triumph of out-of-the-box thinking, the sole quibble being with the casting of Jack Whitehall as the title character: apparently even »

Behemoth review – haunting descent into Mongolia's coal mines

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The effects of China’s industrialisation on workers and the landscape are captured with an affecting lucidity in Zhao Liang’s documentary

Zhao Liang’s haunting documentary tessellates with Jia Zhangke’s recent films in studying the effects of China’s rapid industrialisation on the landscape. Words sourced from Dante float over images of everyday activity at one Inner Mongolian coal mine; as the camera descends into its depths, it becomes apparent we’re several fathoms beyond conventional health-and-safety regulation.

Zhao’s closeups of faces – bathed in sweat, caked with carbons – are as expressive and dynamic as his long shots of fiery smelting yards and mountains being blasted into oblivion: here is a labour that cannot possibly be rebranded. Sporadic digital manipulations, sculpting this region’s exteriors into jagged cubist mosaics, might be interpreted as cheats, striking though they are.

‘When Two Worlds Collide’ Review: Greed Is Global In This Compelling Documentary About A Peruvian Tragedy

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

On July 28, 2006, Alan García was sworn in to office for his second term as the President of Peru, 16 years since his first stint ended with social unrest and severe hyperinflation. In 2007, he delivered a nationally televised address in which he invited (or pleaded with) American entrepreneurs to invest in Peru and harvest the country’s finite natural resources. “We don’t have any political conflicts!” he boasted in a proto-Trumpian moment of goading the gods.

And then, on June 5, 2009, García ordered Peruvian police and military personnel to forcibly prevent protestors from blocking the major road that is used for accessing the country’s fertile Bagua region. Dozens of indigenous people and government troops were killed in the ensuing riot, and many more would die in the violence that resulted from that initial clash. No political conflicts, indeed.

Cosmos review – absurdism without the laughs

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The last film by Andrzej Żuławski is a characteristically eccentric outing that descends into impenetrable gibberish

The final film of the director Andrzej Żuławski – who died in February, best remembered for 1981’s Isabelle Adjani freakout Possession – proves a characteristically eccentric undertaking, adapted from Witold Gombrowicz’s novel set within a mildewing B&B. One half-funny gag: that our writer hero (Jonathan Genet, resistible) is only as dotty as his fellow guests. Yet with all the actors operating some distance off the leash, even the sharper scenes soon clot into an impenetrable layer of gibberish tics. Cultists can claim it as proof Żuławski was doing his own thing until the end, but the film didn’t need releasing so much as sectioning for public safety.
