So Google, MapQuest and Bing Mapping have been using satellite images that show detail to about a yard +/-[?] and have 360° shots from the street. . . IMO the only difference is the detail/resolution. . . did not hear any 'extended' issues on that. . . Yes but the satellite is silent, while drones can be as noisy as helicopters, can crash, can look into windows, and disrupt birds.

I remember quite a few years ago a private photographer came to our front door and wanted know if we were interested in purchasing a aerial photo of our home. My father was not interested but we all thought it was interesting and this kind of photography has been going for many years. In addition, Google, Bing and other government and civilian agencies have been taking aerial or satellite photos of everyone Like Michael McCulley stated above. There has been lots of paranoid media hype suggesting that all drones are really used for is spying on you and your neighbor, that is complete nonsense.

According to the Fourth Amendment, I have a "reasonable expectation of privacy". It's perfectly reasonable if I'm in my back yard, with no buildings near, and privacy fences (I have all of these things) to expect privacy. Someone photographing my backyard with a drone (or satellite) violates that expectation, hence violates the Fourth Amendment.

Does that justify me shooting the drone (or satellite) down? Probably not. Can the person be charged with violating the Fourth Amendment? Probably.

You never could legally shoot down a drone. Frankly, your blasting away randomly in the air is far more dangerous than any drone.

No, you do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy for anything that can be seen from the air or from the street. The air is public airspace and has been since the invention of the balloon.

"Self defense" is only a legal defense when your life or that of another is in imminent danger. I suppose if a drone was about to fire a Hellfire missile at you and you shot it down, that would be self defense. But merely flying over your yard -- that is not self defenses. Defending your privacy is not self defense and does not justify the use of lethal force. However, if you open fire and the drone operator starts shooting back -- he might claim self defense. So might any neighbors who were concerned that you might accidentally shoot their children.

No matter what you think it is, a MR (quad, drone, etc,) is an aircraft in the eyes of the FAA. Shooting down or intentionally disabling an aircraft is a felony that can get you 20 years in a Federal Pen. If someone is killed or injured in the process you can be up for murder (i.e. you shoot down a quad and the falling bits kill someone).

No comment on the legality from the drone side. But firing a bullet into the air in an urban environment is dangerous and illegal. What goes up must come down.
