Photo bomb: Student project sends Instax camera skyward

The irony of all you people ranting about lack of originality..

Why is this news? I do this 10X per week with a GoPro on my 3DR Solo. I take the memory card, and print the photos I like!

I'll never understand the popularity of the Instax and especially don't understand how putting it on a quadcopter is newsworthy. Must have been a really slow news day at DPR. Clever title though.

A visual media student puts a instant film camera on a 'drone' for a "Visual Media Innovation Project" and this is the project which gets the attention and publicity? I don't get it and I'm frightened if this is the best of "innovation" by today's students. (Somehow I doubt it is the best.)

Why not use drones for something more productive and important? How about fast flying defibrillators that are ordered with a GPS aware phone app?

What next? Aerial tintypes with the force of 8 octacopters? Just because someone hasn't done it before doesn't make it good.

just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be. The reason this has NOT been done is because there is no reason for it to be done, other than just messing around with gadgets. Just because you can't find it on youtube doesn't mean some middle school kid in North Dakota hasn't done this already, and said this is stupid. Why does a kid tinkering now get media coverage. If I strap an old crank up phone to a drone will I get a degree from RIT?

Come on... It's just kids playing around with neat ideas. Whether or not it's comes to anything really doesn't matter. It's about learning how to make things work, or what doesn't work.

Now imagine a drone that would autonomously seek out faces, ask if they'd like a portrait then drop them a pic. Interesting project. Not really going to challenge any technology that isn't already out there.

But it could potentially be used for marketing. Imagine halftime at the Superbowl, thousands of these drones taking snaps and dropping instant pictures on to the crowd.

On second thoughts nope, instant film is a novelty, if you care about images you would rather have a high resolution file.

tWoT -another hipster project with irrelevant output... I don't know, maybe if they modified the camera to shoot infrared and print to the instant film, with remote control of the framing of the pictures to make them interesting, you know, or Just Did Anything beyond wasting instant film taking boring shots, it could be news worthy.

When I was a kid I too did odd stuff, that - like this - was totally uninteresting for the rest of the world....

I have had similar setup with video feed to a ground station and servo triger on the shutter on auxiluary channel and been using it commercially in Australia ( having a proper certifications and license) for years. The only difference is that I am not dropping mediocre quality instant photos from the drone. But than again I am a commercial operator and not a Rochester Uni student. And I am not allowed to fly over heads of unsuspected spectators!!! It can only end up bad in case of any failure of the drone....Do not they teach students at Rochester Unif basic safety rules and a common sense ?? Sorry and what was the news worthy DPI's reporting?????

A useless project not worthy of news

I am not sure I get this. Digital cameras on drones have been doing this for quite some time with some very high quality images.

Is this all students at Rochester have to do?
