My friend says P&S cameras are a waste of money

My friend said to me the other day that he thinks its silly and makes absolutely zero sense on why people will blow hundreds and hundreds of dollars on good P&S compact cameras when we all have cameras in our phones. He said its like carrying an extra pair of shoes while you are out in public having already wearing a pair. He said it serves no purpose.

What do you say to this?
