The Buzz: If Spring is a snoozefest so far, jumpstart the season with first-person action film Hardcore Henry. Director Ilya Naishuller is a "huge proponent of practical effects." So, he shot everything "as real as humanly possible," which makes the movie even more badass. Well, that and the fact that the psychotic villain also has telekinetic powers. - Chako

Certificate R   -   Comedy

A titan of industry is sent to prison after she's caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.

The Buzz: We love that Melissa McCarthy has become one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, and it seems like she might be getting into a rhythm where she alternates working with directors Paul Feig and her husband, Ben Falcone. With a few more months to go before Ghostbusters is released, Falcone and McCarthy offer up what looks to be a wickedly funny improvement on Tammy.

As an investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash, his increasingly confessional series of letters to a vending machine company catch the attention of a customer service rep with whom he forms an unlikely connection.

The Buzz: Jake Gyllenhaal dealt with losing his wife in Southpaw, and here he gives the same level of ferocious commitment to a starring role that should have earned, on paper at least, an elusive Best Actor Oscar nomination. Aiding the campaign is Wild/Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée; alas, the movie ultimately earned an inauspicious April release. Audiences might help keep the movie around for a while since it seems to be going over well with the general public.

The Buzz: Norwegian director Joachim Trier's first two movies, Reprise and Oslo, August 31st rank as some of my favorites from the last decade, and he makes his English-language debut here with a story about, among other things, how a family constructs its collective and individual ideas of truth. We learn the truth of Isabelle Huppert's character's fate early in the story, and Trier then reveals how her death was processed as a memory by the members of her family. Along the way he also constructs some elaborate fantasy sequences that illustrate why he's one of the most promising directors working today. - Arno

The Buzz: Nitzan Giladi has been laureled by several film festivals for his feature debut, as have his co-lead actresses Moran Rosenblatt and Assi Levy. Prepare for a wallop in the third act.

A girl falls for the "perfect" guy, who happens to have a very fatal flaw: he's a hitman on the run from the crime cartels who employ him.

The Buzz: Surprising to see such a derivative story idea from Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis. Director Paco Cabezas, who handled a bulk of "Penny Dreadful"'s upcoming third season, gets dinged the most by critics from the reviews we've read, though. Destined for a short theatrical life, most people will probably catch a stream of this crime-caper that lured quite an appealing cast. Speaking of the cast, Sam Rockwell is overdue for a role that is worthy of his talent.

  -   Documentary

A documentary that explores the history and craft of motion-picture presentation through the lives and stories of the last generation of career projectionists.

The Buzz: We hear there's a rather charming series of interviews to be enjoyed once you get past the chilly and dire title of Peter Flynn's documentary on cinema projectionists and the switch from film to digital projection in theaters. Shot mostly around the Northeastern United States, we're looking forward to meeting this cast of eccentrics.
