Robert Downey Jr. doubts there will be an 'Iron Man 4'

15 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It looks like Iron Man won’t be flying solo again any time soon. In an recent interview with USA Today, Robert Downey Jr. said that the billionaire industrialist/superhero he’s played in three highly-successful movies probably won’t see a fourth film with him behind the mask.  When asked about another in the series, Downey Jr. said, “I don’t think that’s in the cards.” He added, “In a way it’s Cap 3, but for me it’s like my little Iron Man 4 and then it's back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes." Since the Iron Man movie franchise began in 2008, the films have grossed nearly $2.5 billion. Downey Jr. has also brought the armored suit and his »

Julia Roberts to Star in Crime Drama ‘Train Man’ (Exclusive)

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sixteen years after “Erin Brockovich,” Julia Roberts is eyeing to star in “Train Man,” a courtroom drama about a real-life New York folk hero, Variety has learned.

Roberts would play a lawyer tasked with defending Darius McCollum, the criminal (and Internet celebrity) known for impersonating public transit authorities in order to drive away subway trains and Greyhound buses. McCollum, who is diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, has been arrested more than 25 times for such crimes. Roberts’ character would be his most recent lawyer, and his previous heists (starting at age 15) are shown throughout the film via flashbacks.

Those who have read the script by Simon Stephenson (of the U.K. series “Eleventh Hour”) tell that Variety it’s a meaty role for Roberts, along the lines of her Oscar-winning portrait in 2000’s “Erin Brockovich.” The film is being produced by Gotham Group. Roberts could also potentially be a producer.

SXSW Film Review: ‘Sausage Party’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For those of you who have ever envisioned Seth Rogen reconstituted as an anthropomorphic processed meat product — and you know who you are — “Sausage Party” may be savored as, if not a dream come true, then a drug-fueled hallucination without the potentially harmful side effects. A madcap crazy salad of industrial-strength raunch, Tex Avery-level visual inventiveness and, no kidding, seriocomic religious allegory, this computer-animated comedy about the secret lives of supermarket merchandise had its premiere as a “work-in-progress” at the SXSW Film Festival prior to a scheduled Aug. 12 theatrical release. Rough edges are glaringly apparent in the film’s current, not-quite-complete state — indeed, a handful of scenes remain represented only by hand-drawings — but it’s already obvious that Sony could have a mid-sized late-summer hit on its hands.

Naturally, many parents will not appreciate having to tell their young offspring who see trailers and TV spots that, yes, this is a cartoon, »

Top Action Film Directors to Feature at Iffa Macao

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ten Asian film makers who are household names as directors of action movies will leverage their brand value to each pick and promote an overseas film at the upcoming International Film Festival and Awards Macao (Iffa Macao.)

The festival, to be held Dec. 8 – 13 in Macau, across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong, has now locked down the format and structure of its inaugural edition.

The new festival is backed by the Macau Film & Television Producers and Culture Association and the Macau Government Tourist Office.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Mgto, was at a launch Tuesday held on the fringes of FilMart in Hong Kong, on Tuesday.

“We want the ten to each choose a film that is neither East Asian and non-American that they would personally go back to,” said Marco Mueller, Iffa Macao’s director. “They should be presenters of ‘world cinema’ and ensure diversity. »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Miss Stevens’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A high-school English teacher chaperones three students at a weekend-long drama competition and finds that she’s the one with a lot to learn in “Miss Stevens,” a well-acted and involving dramedy that takes a few too many facile turns en route to upbeat endings all around. Julia Hart’s directing debut is distinguished by a smartly layered performance from Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”), fully persuasive as a designated authority figure still a few steps away from embracing full adulthood, but it’s hard not to wish the script weren’t quite so insistent on treating its characters — even those it invests with deeper, richer complexities — as problems waiting to be solved by film’s end. Still, with its polished presentation and strong performances, this late-coming-of-ager should serve as a solid calling card for Hart as it makes its way into the niche-distribution stream.

Japan Box Office: ‘Doraemon’ Wins its Second Weekend

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Tokyo — Toho’s “Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan 2016,” the 36th entry in the Doraemon feature animation series, won its second straight weekend at the Japanese box office. In the March 12-13 frame the film earned $4.27 million on 415,000 admissions, pushing its cumulative ticket sales total to 1.07 million. Numbers are set to increase as Japanese schoolkids start their spring break next week.

Ranking at number two was Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur,” which took $2.08 million on 192,000 admissions from 380 screens. This was about 58% of the opening weekend haul of “Inside Out,” which finished with $35 million last year in Japan.

Bowing in the number three slot was “Everest: The Summit of the Gods,” the first Japanese feature to be shot on Mount Everest. Directed by Hideyuki Hirayama and co-distributed by Toho and Asmik Ace, the film opened on 322 screens and recorded $1.84 million on 165,000 admissions.  The forecast is for a final total of $13 million. »

'Sausage Party': SXSW Review

2 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Sausage Party, an R-rated comedy about food products waiting to be sold at a supermarket, begins unpromisingly, with a musical number so effing gratuitously overstuffed with effed-up f-bomb adjectives — most of them irrelevant to the jokes being made — one fears numbness will set in before anything really funny happens. But then a crude hot dog-meets-bun joke hits its mark, and within moments of the song's end it's clear that this raunchy, raucous comedy — a Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg passion project directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan — is going somewhere. The laughs barely let

First 'Sausage Party' trailer is gleefully filthy R-rated comedy mayhem

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A work-in-progress screening of Sausage Party took place in Austin tonight as part of the SXSW film festival, and I'm not surprised people seem generally pleased with what they saw. The studio's asking people not to formally review the movie since it isn't finished yet, and it sounds like they still have a little over a month until they have what they would consider a "finished" film. But they're in the home stretch, certainly, so they have to be feeling pretty good about the enthusiastic response they'e gotten tonight. The red-band teaser trailer is also available now, so you can get an idea what to expect. The film is a very, very R-rated animated comedy, and part of the joke is that it has to look like a real Pixar movie. That's not easy or cheap, and it's exciting to get a look at the work that's been done on the film. »

Review: 'Midnight Special' serves up a strangely beautiful parable on parenting

3 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A young boy who possesses strange and difficult-to-explain powers makes his way towards a mysterious rendezvous with his father doing everything he can to protect him from anyone who might stop him. That's it. That's the basic plot of Midnight Special, and when you boil it down that far, it sounds like something familiar, something we've seen many times before. What makes the film sing is the extraordinary control exhibited by Jeff Nichols as a filmmaker at this point, especially when he's working with Michael Shannon, who has given some of his finest performances when working with Nichols. That continues here. Michael Shannon plays Roy, and when we meet him, he's on the road with his childhood best friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton) and his little boy Alton (Jaeden Lieberher). It's not clear at first why they're running, where they're coming from, or where they're going, and Nichols does a very »

‘Preacher’ Premiere: AMC’s Comic Adaptation Converts New Fans and Pleases the Faithful at SXSW

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

AMC has already seen plenty of success with one popular comic book adaptation, and “The Walking Dead” looks set to have fine company in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s long-gestating “Preacher,” judging by the rapturous reaction the pilot received at SXSW on Monday.

In its world premiere screening at the Paramount Theater, the TV iteration of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s controversial comic drew raucous laughter, applause and outright cheers from the packed house, even in scenes that Rogen later admitted he wasn’t sure would earn a laugh. “I turned to Evan during the screening and said ‘we’re in a room with the most f—ed up people,'” he quipped during the post-episode Q&A.

The property has been a passion project for Rogen and Goldberg since they were kids, the co-directors and executive producers said, and they’ve been fighting to adapt it for 10 years. »

‘The Bachelor’ Finale Recap: What Happened Before — And After — Ben Proposed?

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead, if you have not watched the Season 20 finale of “The Bachelor.” The following post reveals the winner chosen by Ben Higgins.

About three quarters into the two-hour “Bachelor” finale (not counting the hour-long after show), Ben says that he is just confused as he has ever been about which of the two remaining women he will propose to. In this moment, we become painfully aware that ABC programmed ninety minutes of television intended solely for the audience to fill and refill its collective wine glass. Indeed, a “Bachelor” finale is not a plot-dense event. That being said, no pay-off comes without proper build-up, and Chris Harrison, of all people, knows how to set a stage.

We start live in the company of an in-studio audience: jeweler-to-the-stars Neil Lane is there, Ben’s pastor is backstage and the families of both finalists are in the house. »

Jojo Fletcher is officially the next “Bachelorette” for ABC’s hit dating show.

The announcement was made during Monday night’s live episode of “After the Final Rose,” following the Season 20 finale of “The Bachelor,” in which Ben Higgins picked his winner.

Fletcher, a 25-year-old real estate developer from Dallas, Texas, was the runner-up on “The Bachelor.” Tonight, she lost out to Lauren Bushnell who is now engaged to Higgins, after accepting his proposal on the finale.

Fletcher’s announcement comes as a surprise, as “Bachelor” contestant Caila Quinn was rumored to have been selected as the next “Bachelorette,” partly because she is half Filipino and the ABC reality show has faced much criticism for its lack of diversity. However, Fletcher’s mother is Persian. On the hometown dates episode on “The Bachelor,” Higgins visited Fletcher’s family’s home and spent time with her mother, father and brothers. On “The Bachelor’s” official website, »
