Melissa McCarthy Raps That Classic Kanye Song ‘Butterscotch Man’ in Her SNL Promos

10 February 2016 1:02 PM, PST

In this week's Saturday Night Live promos, Melissa McCarthy and Vanessa Bayer chat while they get their nails done, and those ladies seem so fun, it'll make you wish you were sandwiched between them getting a pedicure. Talking about Saturday's musical guest Kanye West (hey, that rhymes!), Melissa raps a made-up Kanye jam called "Butterscotch Man," which goes something like this: "Butterscotch man, tater-tot yam, put it in my ham, butterscotch man." A tater-tot yam doesn't sound bad, actually. It kind of sounds like sweet-potato fries.  This will be Kanye's seventh performance on SNL and McCarthy's fourth time hosting. It might, however, be Kanye's first time ever singing "Butterscotch Man." »

Asia McClain From Serial Just Did Her First Interview

10 February 2016 12:53 PM, PST

Adnan Syed’s lone alibi witness has finally been given a chance to testify, and now she's given her first interview about the experience. At a hearing last week to determine whether Syed should get a new trial, Asia McClain took the stand to reassert her claim that she was with Syed at the time the state claimed he murdered his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. Serial devotees will remember that McClain tried to come forward after Syed was arrested, but his original attorney, the late Christina Gutierrez, never followed up. After taking the stand, McClain spoke to ABC News about why she testified. "I was compelled by my children," she explained. "Keeping that legacy, integrity, and stepping up to tell the truth was very important to me." McClain says she was "nervous" and "a little fearful" about what the prosecutor’s attitude might be, and made a point of not »

Beat Bugs Trailer: Netflix’s New Animated Kids Series Features a Ton of Beatles Covers Your Kids Won’t Know Are Covers

10 February 2016 12:10 PM, PST

Step aside, Narcos: There's a new Netflix kids' show in town! It's called Beat Bugs, and it's an animated show about five best bug-friends who explore the suburban backyard where they live. What's more, the series will feature over 50 covers of Beatles songs by artists such as Eddie Vedder, Sia, Chris Cornell, Pink, the Shins, Of Monsters and Men, Regina Spektor, and many more. Creator Josh Wakely will direct, write, and produce Beat Bugs, which was green-lit by Netflix after securing a deal with Sony/Atv publishing for the worldwide rights to cover songs from John Lennon and Paul McCartney's Northern Songs catalogue, Rolling Stone reports. Judging by Eddie Vedder's cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" in the trailer, it seems like the covers will stay pretty true to the originals. But we suggest they mix things up a little with hits such as "Blackbird (Will Eat You Because »

A Film Producer Is Tweeting Out Terrible Descriptions of Female Characters in Scripts

10 February 2016 12:05 PM, PST

When you're creating a female character for your film, you've got a lot of choices. For instance, do you make her a lithe, leggy blonde — or a lithe, leggy brunette? That's a joke, but it's also not really a joke, as producer Ross Putnam's new Twitter account @femscriptintros attests. The account tweets out horrible character descriptions of the female leads in movie scripts Putnam reads, in which the women are described as sexual props first, and actual interesting characters second. (For privacy's sake, he changes every name to "Jane.") Read some of the lowlights below, just as soon as you get done dancing naked on your bed. You know, for fun. »

What Shows Will Make Me Cry? Your Pressing TV Questions, Answered

10 February 2016 11:19 AM, PST

Welcome back to Stay Tuned, Vulture's TV advice column. Each Wednesday, Margaret Lyons answers your pressing television questions. To submit your own Qs, please email staytuned@nymag.com, leave a comment, or tweet @margeincharge with the hashtag #staytuned. My favorite shows are low-concept, human ones that make me cry: Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood (Boy Meets World also holds a special place in my tear ducts). I've been somewhat emotionally satiated by comedy/dramas like Transparent, Looking, BoJack, Enlightened, Please Like Me, You're the Worst, Cucumber/Banana. I just have not been able to find more dramas that give me that gut-wrenching, squee-inducing, choked-up feeling that I would get on an episodic basis with the above shows. It feels like dramas these days are too concept-driven for their own good. I love the payoff on an emotional investment; prime-time soaps and dramas lately feel too rushed to earn »

These Deleted Scenes From Mrs. Doubtfire Will Remind You That the Movie Was Actually Deeply Sad

10 February 2016 11:06 AM, PST

Between the run-by fruiting and that frosting-faced "Helllooooo!" it's easy to remember Mrs. Doubtfire as that goofy movie where Robin Williams played a hilarious old British lady. But we often forget that at its heart, the movie was about a dad who would do anything to see his kids, including pretending to be their new nanny, which is pretty heartbreaking (and, let's be real, just a little bit terrifying). These deleted scenes are completely jokeless, and if they had been included in the final product, our memories of Mrs. Doubtfire might have been a little different. Before Robin Williams died in 2014, there was talk of a sequel, which now, of course, will never be. But if nothing else, it's nice to see some new Williams footage. »

Watch the First 4 Minutes of The Walking Dead’s Mid-Season Premiere: Negan, Negan, Negan

10 February 2016 11:04 AM, PST

Last we left our heroes of Alexandria, things were going to zombie hell. And if the undead weren't the problem, other people were. In the first four minutes of the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead, we rejoin the field team consisting of Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham as they run into a checkpoint, courtesy of Negan. While we don't get to see the biggest bad of the comic books (and in fact, we won't actually see Jeffrey Dean Morgan get his evil on until the season finale), his name is invoked from the jump. "Who's Negan?" is probably a question Rick Grimes & Co. will be asking for the rest of the season, but it's an answer they probably won't want to know. »

A&E’s New Show Will Have Civilians Pretend to Be Convicts in Prison, Which Isn’t an Uncomfortable Premise for a TV Show at All

10 February 2016 10:57 AM, PST

A&E announced on Wednesday that it will be debuting a new docuseries called 60 Days In, which will send seven civilians into the prison population at Clark County Jail in Jefferson, Indiana. Over 12 episodes, the series hopes to "expose internal issues and what really happens behind bars." You're wondering: How did they get an unbiased look into the correctional facility? The series was made possible with the aid of the state and Sheriff Jamey Noel, who "hand-selected" the participants. “It was no secret that the Clark County Jail had problems and we needed to take quick control," said Sheriff Noel. "The only way to truly understand what was going on in the jail was to implement innocent participants into the system to provide first-hand unbiased intelligence. These brave volunteers helped us identify critical issues within our system that undercover officers would not have been able to find."The lucky men »

Kate Winslet Won’t Boycott the Oscars Because Her Heart Will Go on for Leo

10 February 2016 10:17 AM, PST

Sorry, #OscarsSoWhite, but your fight for equal representation at the Academy's annual dog-and-pony show will have to wait another year when Leonardo DiCaprio isn't the favorite to win before Kate Winslet can get her activist on. At Tuesday night's London premiere of her new film, Triple 9, she confirmed that she wouldn't miss this year's Oscars for the world — not because she's a nominee, but because, like she's been predicting all along, this is her soul mate Leo's year! "To be honest with you, it has been such an extraordinary year for women, I'd feel like I was letting my side down if I didn't go," she told the BBC. "And also I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo's year. And he is my closest friend in the world and I just couldn't imagine not being there to support him." Awwwww. But at this point, Kate »

Deadpool and the Promising Rise of Heteroflexibility in Comedies

10 February 2016 10:07 AM, PST

The male lead in a new studio comedy loves unicorns and rainbows almost as much as he adores George Michael’s seminal ’80s band Wham! When he goes to work, he dons a form-fitting tank top emblazoned with the face of Golden Girls star Bea Arthur; at home, while casually relaxing, he’s more likely to wear a T-shirt touting the musical Rent. Our protagonist has got a girlfriend, but he’s not afraid to lightly flirt with a male baddie or two, and by the time the closing credits roll, he’s even willing to admit that the film’s hunky villain is hotter than his live-in love. And while he ostensibly presents as straight, his sexual fantasies involve Tony-winning gay icon Bernadette Peters, and he’s pretty open-minded in bed: In the film’s most memorable moment, he gets on all fours and lets his girlfriend plow him with a strap-on. »

Cuba Gooding Jr., Selma Blair, and More Recall Their Memories of Watching the Bronco Car Chase

10 February 2016 9:50 AM, PST

Almost 22 years ago, 95 million Americans stopped what they were doing to watch as suspected murderer O.J. Simpson appeared to flee justice in a white Ford Bronco, with his friend A.C. Cowlings at the wheel. The infamous slow-speed chase that ensued aired live on TV, preempting most scheduled programming and kicking off the beginning of a morbid courtroom obsession. In light of the The People v. O.J. Simpson's second episode, which showcased its own version of the pursuit last night (read our backstory here), we asked Cuba Gooding Jr., Selma Blair, David Schwimmer, and more to recall their memories from summer '94.Cuba Gooding Jr.[I was] at a buddy's, watching the finals — the Knicks game. I keep saying this, but I do remember, at some point, the game was on the radio and we were watching the chase on television. It started as us watching on TV, and then »

The Flash Recap: Through the Looking Glass

10 February 2016 9:40 AM, PST

Ever since Earth-2 was first teased, I've been curious to see how The Flash would delve into it. Would the show go for heartbreak? Would we see a bevy of references to other parts of the DC Universe? Would it wonderfully embrace the Silver Age zaniness of Barry Allen? The answer is all of the above."Welcome to Earth-2" marries incredible action sequences, amazing direction by Millicent Shelton, some of the cast's best acting (particularly from Candice Patton and Grant Gustin), lots of heart, and just the right number of nods to the comics. It is undoubtedly the best episode of the season, and just may be the best episode of The Flash yet. This installment opens with Barry closing all of the breaches that lead to the alternate reality, except for the one at S.T.A.R. Labs. Harry is emboldened by fierce determination to save his daughter, »

The Purge 3 Trailer: It’s Election Year!

10 February 2016 9:35 AM, PST

Even in this bizarro America with an annual purge, where all murder and mayhem is legal, there are elections. Obviously one of the big social issues of their time is whether you are pro-purge or anti-purge. Frank Grillo is back, this time as a bodyguard for an anti-purge senator played by Elizabeth Mitchell (Dr. Juliet Burke from Lost!). This third Purge chapter is intent on stressing the political implications of trying to get rid of this state-mandated cleansing ritual. Turns out: They're not so good! The old white men in charge are very pro-purge because it allows poor people to kill each other, but Americans will not have it! They will rise and kill these bad guys during the acceptable 12-hour window! »

There’s a Better Call Saul Superhero Comic, and You Can Read It Now

10 February 2016 9:33 AM, PST

In the first season of Better Call Saul, we saw Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill before he assumed his alter ego as sleazy superlawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, who antiheroically pursues half-truths, shady justice, and the tax-dodging American way. In advance of Monday's second-season premiere, AMC has released a bizarre and delightful online comic wherein Saul, clad in a Superman-esque cape, flies around Albuquerque to combat some rowdy youths. It's written by Jenn Carroll and Gordon Smith, and features artwork by Steve Ellis. This is actually the second Better Call Saul comic, after last year's more realistic Better Call Saul: Client Development. The new caped-crusader series will be told in six parts and released bi-weekly. You can read the whole first installment on AMC's website right now. Up, up, and away (to a plea bargain)! »

Fact-Checking Episode Two of The People v. O.J. Simpson

10 February 2016 9:31 AM, PST

FX’s new limited series, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, takes us through the 1994–1995 criminal trial assessing football star turned Hollywood icon O.J. Simpson’s guilt or innocence in the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. We’re walking through all ten episodes with author, magazine editor, and UCLA communication studies professor Jim Newton — who was the Los Angeles Times’ lead reporter for the duration of Simpson’s arrest and trial — in an effort to identify what People v. O.J. handles with care versus when it deviates from documented fact and common perception. The intention here is less to debunk an explicitly dramatized version of true events than to help viewers piece together a holistic picture of the circumstances surrounding Nicole and Goldman’s murders and O.J.’s eventual acquittal. In other words, these weekly digests are best »

Gwen Stefani Teases Title, Track List of New Album, and Oh, You Know the Songs Are Emotional

10 February 2016 9:23 AM, PST

“Misery.” “Red Flag.” “Me Without You.” Yep, this truly will be the divorce-pop album of your dreams. As anticipated since October, when Gwen Stefani dropped the breakup ballad “Used to Love You,” the No Doubt front woman has unofficially announced the title and track list of her first solo album since 2006’s The Sweet Escape. “This Is What the Truth Feels Like,” Stefani tweeted, along with a very emotional-sounding array of song titles. If it’s wrong to dance to a pop song about the recent dissolution of a 12-year marriage, then no one will be right until at least the end of 2016. »

Grammy-Winning Producer Jeff Bhasker on Crafting ‘Uptown Funk’ and His Prolific Career

10 February 2016 9:13 AM, PST

Over the past half-decade, superproducer Jeff Bhasker has evolved from a behind-the-boards impresario into a de facto hitmaker. Since connecting with Kanye West to confect half of the songs on the perilously moody 808s & Heartbreak in 2008, the Socorro, New Mexico–raised musician elevated his profile with credits on projects with Drake, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Bruno Mars, and netted two Grammys for his work with Jay Z, West, and fun., the latter of which helped earned him a Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) nomination at the 2013 ceremony. This year he’s up for the same award again, for his work on individual songs (Elle King’s “Last Damn Night,” Cam’s “Burning House”) and full-length albums (Mark Ronson’s Uptown Special, Nate Ruess’s Grand Romantic). Ahead of the 58th annual ceremony, Bhasker breaks down what it means to produce a record in 2016 and the process behind some »

Charlize Theron Sought for Fast 8 Villain, Which, Considering She Has an Oscar for Playing a Serial Killer, Seems Like a Great Call

10 February 2016 8:06 AM, PST

If you’re shooting a film with a prominently featured female murderer, sociopath, or archvillain and you aren’t trying to get Charlize Theron for the role, clearly, you do not care about your art. According to Deadline, Fast 8 director F. Gary Gray and screenwriter Chris Morgan are allegedly seeking the Mad Max actress for their movie’s sole female villain. (Theron previously worked with Gray on 2003's Italian Job remake.) If you have any questions about this casting choice, please revisit Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s Monster, for which she won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Hey, remember when Vin Diesel predicted Furious 7 would win the Academy Award for Best Picture? Just something to think about for Fast 8. Just saying. Just something to think about. Just putting it out there. »
