SD1 Merrill to sd Quattro - What have we lost?

Sigma's transition from traditional dSLR to mirror-less ICLC has created some interesting feature/performance gaps between the SD1(Merrill) and the sd Quattro.

Here are a few of them (in no particular order) - add more if you can.

  • The sd Q has only half the minimum shutter speed : 1/4000 vs 1/8000 sec of its predecessor.
  • The sd Q has no optical view finder (OVF). This means you'll never be able to see what's in front of your camera without some level of electronic interpretation. Maybe a level of 'purity' is lost?
  • Sigma has now abandoned all the work that went into creating the excellent SD1 mirror box. This is such a beautifully dampened and quiet device that was developed to make the SD1 as vibration free as possible.
  • If Sigma drops the Merrill sensor completely (and they probably will), the sd Q will eventually replace the older camera, making it impossible to create that stunning 'micro contrast' look that so many Sigma shooters love.

That's my five cents worth. What do you think?
