Why are the reactions almost identical after every major launch? I remember the moment, when Sigma released SD14:

  • per pixel-detail has gone!
  • higher noise even at ISO100!
  • where are the deep shades of blue? skies look ugly now!
  • where's the dynamic range?

Again, when Sigma released SD1 aka Merrill:

  • where is the per-pixel detail of SD14?
  • where are the exquisite colors of SD14? skies look ugly now!
  • foliage rendition is awfull! the strong point of Foveon has gone
  • shadows are desaturated!
  • it lacks the right Foveon look!
  • high noise even at base ISO!
  • where's the dynamic range of SD14?

Well, now with the Quattro I can almost copy / paste the previous list:

  • where is the per-pixel detail of Merrill?
  • where are the exquisite colors of Merrill? skies look ugly now!
  • foliage rendition is awfull! the strong point of Merrill has gone
  • shadows are desaturated!
  • it lacks the right Foveon look!
  • high noise even at base ISO!
  • where's the dynamic range Merrill?

There are two possibilities - Sigma always fixed these issues between those generations - or - photographers learned how to use new models properly. I can't imagine any other explanation, why is Merrill praised for the same properties, which were criticised at the time of its launch.
