The Sony Alpha 7R II is a 42.4MP mirrorless camera with an image stabilized full-frame BSI CMOS sensor. The sensor is by far the largest backside illuminated CMOS chip to be released, allowing the maximum expanded ISO to rise two stops to 102,400. The a7R II also gains 5-axis image stabilization that is rated at 4.5 stops, according to CIPA standard. The a7R II can capture 4K (UHD) video at 30p/25p or 24p in the XAVC S 4K format. The 4K video can be taken either from the full sensor width or from a Super 35 crop.

The a7R II brings 42MP stills and 4K video to a small, lightweight body. Electronic shutter and in-body image stabilization make for high quality images and video you'll work harder to get, if you get it at all, from comparable DSLRs. BSI-CMOS gives the a7R II class-leading low light performance and respectable dynamic range. The a7R II also introduces disruptive on-sensor phase detection AF, with the widest coverage of any full-frame camera, precise focus on eyes, professional AF results in video, and the ability to focus non-native lenses.
Good for: Portrait, wedding, event, newborn and, generally, photojournalistic shooters with heavy demands on accurate AF with fast lenses. Landscape shooters wanting the freedom of various lens families.
Not so good for: Sports photographers, wildlife shooters, and anyone looking to follow subjects meticulously during continuous bursts.
