Amazon Studios Acquires Woody Allen's Star-Studded Untitled Rom-Com

18 February 2016 3:03 PM, PST

It seems like the prolific Woody Allen has gotten rather comfortable at Amazon, as he has entrusted the company with both distribution and streaming rights to his latest as-yet-untitled new feature. This release marks a major step forward for Amazon Studios' distribution strategy, as the company has often secured streaming rights to projects and partnered with theatrical distributors to bring the films to theaters in limited release. Such was the case last December when Amazon partnered with Roadside Attractions to bring Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" to theaters. The company has secured all theatrical and streaming rights to Allen's movie. Read More: Woody Allen to Star in His Amazon Series Opposite...Miley Cyrus? The untitled feature will open with a traditional, theatrical release over the summer, followed by its streaming debut exclusive to Amazon Prime subscribers. “Like all beginning relationships, there is much hope, mutual affection, and genuine goodwill -- the lawsuits. »

Read More: Vimeo's 10,000th Staff Pick Introduces a Mind-Blowing Hologram Experience Now in its third year, the Lexus Short Film Series has picked four promising new directors whose short films they will finance. The films will be produced and internationally showcased by The Weinstein Company. The project was launched in 2013 with the stated goal of "supporting and nurturing a new generation of emerging filmmakers." The four winning filmmakers faced stiff competition this year, having been chosen amongst a group that included close to 4,500 applicants. "We treated this project as if it were a film festival," explained producer Joey Horvitz, who is overseeing the project for TWC. "Any filmmaker with a film that played at any festival was eligible. Also, current film students could submit a short regardless of it playing at a festival." How 'Darby Forever' Director Oz Rodriguez Used His 'SNL' Skills to Make a Darling New Short

18 February 2016 1:09 PM, PST

Read More: Vimeo Pushes Further into Original Programming It's never easy for "Saturday Night Live" stars to make the jump off the small screen, but Oz Rodriguez (one half of the venerable sketch comedy show's very popular directing duo Matt & Oz) seems to have the right idea. The filmmaker is now behind the camera on the charming short film "Darby Forever," written by fellow "SNL" talents Chris Kelly and Aidy Bryant (who also stars in the film), a canny move that marries his short-form sensibilities with the freedom of going long as part of Vimeo's new original programming initiative. The short centers on Bryant's eponymous Darby, a clerk at a mostly boring fabric store, who wiles away her time dreaming about a brighter kind of life. That's not to say that Darby's actual existence is awful, after all, her boss is played by the incomparable Retta and her customers include a literally rocking Natasha Lyonne. »

Watch: 'The Path' Trailer Asks Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan To Believe Everything

18 February 2016 12:52 PM, PST

Read More: Watch: Aaron Paul and Hugh Dancy Find Faith — But Not Scientology — in Hulu's 'The Path' Trailer How far would you go for your faith?  It's a simple question hiding immense complexities, including the various answers — and extremes in answers — each person could provide. Perhaps the most relevant example of those extremes came last year when Alex Gibney released his documentary on Scientology, "Going Clear," examining the terrifying backstory of a "church" that most now see as a cult. There's a fine line between the two concepts, and "The Path" seems to defining that line for us. In the above trailer, Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad") and Michelle Monaghan ("Gone, Baby, Gone") play husband and wife to a family of followers; specifically followers of a new belief system run by Hugh Dancy ("Hannibal") that may or may not be hiding some deep, dark secrets. 9 Contemporary Indies That Are New Horror Classics

18 February 2016 10:12 AM, PST

"The Witch" (2016) The latest film to join the new horror classic club, Robert Eggers' exemplary debut "The Witch" is 90 minutes of controlled atmospheric dread. Billed as a "New England Folktale," the movie revolves around a banished family of Puritanical Christians who set up a new home in a remote patch of wilderness. While the father is certain they will be able to grow their own crops and survive, things slowly take a turn for the sinister. What happens next combines a shattering period piece about the dissolution of a family with a genuinely disturbing horror movie about possession. Eggers, a former production designer, is so gruelingly authentic in every detail that the terror becomes frighteningly grounded, making ever slight disturbance in the family's foundation a rattling and troubling experience. The result is the most terrifying movie of 2016, hands down. "The House of the Devil" (2009)Ti West has quickly emerged as. »

Why 'Things to Come' Filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve Refuses to Get Caught Up in Ideologies

18 February 2016 9:15 AM, PST

Read More: Berlin Review: In 'L'Avenir,' Isabelle Huppert Takes Stock of Her Life One of the very best films to emerge from this year's Berlinale, the competition entry "Things to Come" was written and directed by the French director Mia Hansen-Løve, with the always-charismatic Isabelle Huppert in the lead role in a gentle, poignant story about a philosophy teacher whose life falls apart when her husband leaves and her mother dies. For Huppert's Nathalie, the only way to cope with it is to let time take its course — something that proves to be both a curse and a blessing at the same time. In a way, the film resonates with the filmmaker's previous work: While "Goodbye, First love" and "Eden" were films about passions of youth that wane with time, in "Things to Come," Nathalie has been in love with philosophy her whole life, but ultimately discovers she loves life even more. »
