Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business. Fleming: I feel a rant or two coming on today. First up: how in the name of Sweet Baby Jesus does a movie as balls out funny as The Brothers Grimsby tank so badly? SXSW Film Review: ‘Sausage Party’

26 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For those of you who have ever envisioned Seth Rogen reconstituted as an anthropomorphic processed meat product — and you know who you are — “Sausage Party” may be savored as, if not a dream come true, then a drug-fueled hallucination without the potentially harmful side effects. A madcap crazy salad of industrial-strength raunch, Tex Avery-level visual inventiveness and, no kidding, seriocomic religious allegory, this computer-animated comedy about the secret lives of supermarket merchandise had its premiere as a “work-in-progress” at the SXSW Film Festival prior to a scheduled Aug. 12 theatrical release. Rough edges are glaringly apparent in the film’s current, not-quite-complete state — indeed, a handful of scenes remain represented only by hand-drawings — but it’s already obvious that Sony could have a mid-sized late-summer hit on its hands.

Naturally, many parents will not appreciate having to tell their young offspring who see trailers and TV spots that, yes, this is a cartoon, »

“We want the ten to each choose a film that is neither East Asian and non-American that they would personally go back to,” said Marco Mueller, Iffa Macao’s artistic director. “They should be presenters of ‘world cinema’ and ensure diversity. »

‘Sausage Party’ At SXSW: The Red Band Trailer Doesn’t Come Close To Doing The Vulgar Masterpiece Justice

“What the [expletive] did I just watch?” That’s the very first thing I tweeted after the credits ended on Sausage Party. The eight-years-in-the-making animated film directed by Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends) and Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens) and written by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, Kyle Hunter, and Ariel Shaffir destroyed the Paramount Theater audience tonight during its SXSW work-in-progress screening, and I still have no idea how to even talk about it… »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Miss Stevens’

48 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A high-school English teacher chaperones three students at a weekend-long drama competition and finds that she’s the one with a lot to learn in “Miss Stevens,” a well-acted and involving dramedy that takes a few too many facile turns en route to upbeat endings all around. Julia Hart’s directing debut is distinguished by a smartly layered performance from Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”), fully persuasive as a designated authority figure still a few steps away from embracing full adulthood, but it’s hard not to wish the script weren’t quite so insistent on treating its characters — even those it invests with deeper, richer complexities — as problems waiting to be solved by film’s end. Still, with its polished presentation and strong performances, this late-coming-of-ager should serve as a solid calling card for Hart as it makes its way into the niche-distribution stream.

10 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Total Bombs

5 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We.ve already had a couple of monumental hits thus far in 2016, with both Deadpool and Zootopia smashing records when they dropped. On the other side of that coin, however, we.ve already had the first huge, big budget bomb in Gods of Egypt, which did not connect with either critics or general audiences. (Admittedly, I kind of adored the bombastic, wing-nut craziness of it, but I totally get how most people did not.) With this in mind, we thought we.d look forward to some other movies coming down the pipe that we suspect could similarly tank at the box office. It.s not that we think these movies will be bad.we hope, and in expect in many cases, that they.ll be great. While we try to stay optimistic, however, these are also examples of movies where there appears to be a legitimate chance that audiences might »

SXSW Film Review: ‘My Blind Brother’

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After living for more than a decade within the Apatovian slacker-comedy tradition, in which the joys of arrested development are smiled upon indulgently for a while before our heroes stride heroically and inevitably into maturity, it’s weirdly refreshing to see a romantic comedy where selfishness, resentment and sloth are presented as unabashed virtues. Such is the charm of Sophie Goodhart’s “My Blind Brother,” which takes an ostensibly dark premise — a man of few qualities attempts to steal his overachieving blind brother’s girlfriend — and turns it into a featherweight frolic as winningly unambitious as its central couple played by Nick Kroll and Jenny Slate. The film has “Netflix acquisition” written all over it.

Square-jawed and iron-willed, Robbie (Adam Scott) is a fully inspirational man. In spite of his blindness, he manages to excel at almost everything a sighted person could do, whether it’s running marathons, skiing or »

If The Princess Diaries 3 Really Happens, These 5 People Need To Return

6 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After almost a 12 year gap, there's talk about town that The Princess Diaries 3 might actually happen. Considering the fact that the literary source material has 11 installments, the latest of which is geared towards a more mature audience, there's plenty of material to be mined if Garry Marshall's latest comments in People end up panning out. Though if Marshall and Anne Hathaway's wishes to make a third installment come true, there's five stars from the previous two installments that need to return.  Anne Hathaway Obviously, The Princess Diaries 3 wouldn't be anything without its crown princess, Anne Hathaway. Though Garry Marshall mentions that Anne Hathaway's current pregnancy causes a slight delay in actually bringing the project to the forefront, both parties seem engaged in making it happen. And with a chance to tell the story of a more grown-up Princess Mia Thermopolis Renaldi, the third entry in the series »

Julia Roberts to Star in Crime Drama ‘Train Man’ (Exclusive)

6 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sixteen years after “Erin Brockovich,” Julia Roberts is eyeing to star in “Train Man,” a courtroom drama about a real-life New York folk hero, Variety has learned.

Roberts would play a lawyer tasked with defending Darius McCollum, the criminal (and Internet celebrity) known for impersonating public transit authorities in order to drive away subway trains and Greyhound buses. McCollum, who is diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, has been arrested more than 25 times for such crimes. Roberts’ character would be his most recent lawyer, and his previous heists (starting at age 15) are shown throughout the film via flashbacks.

Those who have read the script by Simon Stephenson (of the U.K. series “Eleventh Hour”) tell that Variety it’s a meaty role for Roberts, along the lines of her Oscar-winning portrait in 2000’s “Erin Brockovich.” The film is being produced by Gotham Group. Roberts could also potentially be a producer.

Why Sally Field Hated Her Part In The Amazing Spider-Man Movies

No matter who is playing Spider-Man, and what studio is behind the current adaptation of the mighty Marvel hero, Aunt May always will be designed as a supportive side character . a voice of compassion and reason who.s there to help troubled teen hero Peter Parker figure the right move in a difficult situation. Apparently no one told Sally Field that she.d have a reduced and supportive role in the Amazing Spider-Man movies, however, because when she opened up to talk show guru Howard Stern, she kind of threw her character . and the failed franchise . under the bus.   Sally Field, as you may or may not remember, played Peter Parker.s precious Aunt May in two Amazing Spider-Man movies, tending to the needs (and the laundry) of Andrew Garfield.s Spidey. It was a thankless role each time out, to say the least, and Field knows it. On The »
