‘Hardcore Henry’ is Unlike Anything You’ve Seen Before, For Better and Worse [SXSW Review]

14 March 2016 4:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Hardcore Henry is less of a movie and more of a 95-minute assault on good taste, a bloody theme park ride in filmic clothing, and/or the gruesome collision of the video gaming and cinematic languages. It’s a singular experience that’s truly unlike any other movie, and for some viewers, it will still be, understandably, one […]

The Screening Room's Home Viewing Platform Gets Peter Jackson's Support

14 March 2016 4:26 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Major directors, from Peter Jackson to Ron Howard and at least one major exhibition chain, are initially supporting Facebook and Napster cofounder Sean Parker's The Screening Room, the controversial new day-and-date home viewing option for new releases. Art House Convergence, the association of independent specialized theater owners (though not industry leader Landmark Theatres), has sent an email polling their members about what their formal response should be, as all sides assess The Screening Room's potential impact on the industry. Parker's The Screening Room would sell home viewers a $150 device, which would give them 48 hours to watch new movies on the same date they open at theaters for a $50 dollar per household charge. This would equate roughly to the expense of four adult full price tickets plus more expensive theater concessions plus driving/parking costs, but with the convenience of not leaving home.  Read More: Would You Pay $50 To Watch A First-Run, »

FilMart: Nikkatsu Reinvents ‘Roman Porno’

14 March 2016 4:05 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Five of Japan’s top directors — Sion Sono and Hideo Nakata among them — will make short features in the classic “Nikkatsu Roman Porno” format for theatrical release and TV broadcast, Nikkatsu has revealed.

Other directors for the “Roman Porno Reboot Project” are Akihiko Shiota, Kazuya Shiraishi and Isao Yukisada.

All will be given the same budget and be required to shoot their films within one week, with running times of 70 to 80 minutes. Exact titles and release schedules have yet to be decided.

In the 1970s and 1980s the Nikkatsu Roman Porno genre, which allowed directors wide latitude if they included a certain number of sex scenes in their films, was the launching pad for many now-prominent Japanese filmmakers, including Yojiro Takita, director of the Oscar winner “Departures.”

The new films will be released theatrically starting this winter and will also be offered to subscribers on the SkyPerfecTV! satellite platform.

During his SXSW keynote address in Austin, the Drinking Buddies director talked about his prolific approach to film-making and staying financially buoyant

Film-maker Joe Swanberg used his SXSW film festival keynote address to deliver a stirring case for indie directors to take chances, be committed to work they love and – above all –not be scared to be prolific.

Swanberg began by swiftly explaining why he made it a point to be so prolific from the outset of his career. “The myth of the brilliant first feature that just takes off and starts off your career is one way to go about it,” he said. “But the other way to go about it is to be tenacious and make so much shit, that people will lose the will to fight against you.”

Review: Jeff Nichols' 'Midnight Special' Is A Mournful Homage To The Primal Instincts Of Fatherhood

14 March 2016 3:18 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

What if there were something entirely new in this world? What if it were your son? The idea that your child might be a semi-messianic, unprecedented creature of ungovernable, infinite potential is fairly common among parents, but what if it were proven to be a literal fact? Great science fiction is almost always founded on such simple but paradigm-shifting what-ifs, and the fourth feature from director Jeff Nichols ("Shotgun Stories," "Mud," "Take Shelter") brings this premise thrumming and throbbing to life. Structured as a low-key chase movie, unfolding with the dark urgency of a conspiracy thriller, living mostly not in your heart or even your mind but in the hairs on the back of your neck, "Midnight Special" actually emerges most resonantly as a mournful homage, or maybe a psalm, to the primal instincts of fatherhood.
