Ryan Gosling Hosts ‘SNL': Hunk Factor and Mike Myers Don’t Save Weak Episode

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Ryan Gosling turned in an acceptable “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut, but the appearance was rife with exactly the types of drawbacks that you’d imagine with somebody like him — too much reliance on the whole “holy crap, this guy is so damn hot!” joke, and a few too many crackups. The material throughout the show was also not quite up to par with previous episodes this season. The cold open featured Taran Killam and Cecily Strong as the Trumps. Sure, these actors nailed their impersonations, but the joke of The Donald reciting a naughty and nice list was a. »

In “Brooklyn,” Saoirse Ronan plays Ellis, a young Irish woman who leaves her hometown to travel to America and start life anew. “She went from one culture to another one,” explains production designer Francois Seguin during our recent webcam chat (watch below). He was tasked not only with recreating the look and feel of the 1950s, but with portraying the emotional journey the character takes as well. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions One of the ways Seguin and his team achieved this was by playing with the size of the spaces Eilis inhabits. Of her home in Ireland, he says, “It’s a bit small: the house is small, the shop she works in is small. She is in a small town.” Upon arriving in America, everything is shown to be much larger. “She suddenly has room to grow. She goes from a »

Review: 'Doctor Who' is 'Hell Bent' on saying goodbye to a great character

4 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A few thoughts on tonight's "Doctor Who" season finale — and on this season as a whole — coming up just as soon as we have lunch followed by breakfast... As someone with virtually no "Doctor Who" experience prior to the reboot, I've always appreciated Russell T. Davies' decision to kill off the Timelords. As it is, the new version of the series has plenty of links to the old — especially since Davies couldn't stop himself from continually bringing back more and more Daleks — but I've only occasionally felt like I arrived at class without having done the reading assignment when I watch episodes dealing with the Doctor's former friends and enemies. Obviously, the series has lots of fans who can recite chapter and verse on every adventure going back to William Hartnell, but for us relative newbies, sidelining the Time Lords did a good job of boiling the show down »

Ash vs. Evil Dead Bad Skeletons and Good Intestines

5 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

I’m still unsure if the show knows exactly what its tone is supposed to be.  Evil Dead has always been more gross, creepy and over the top than straight-up scary. This episode opens with Ruby and Fisher investigating Brujo’s house before being attacked by a truly terrible CGI skeleton that seems to be designed to be more badass scary, like the wights of Game of Thrones. One of the things that makes great campy horror like Evil Dead work is straddling that line between creepy and goofy (which the human-possessed-as-Deadite makeup does so well).  But does AvED want to be camp? Sticking with the old-school deadite look and all the yuk-yuk one-liners indicate yes, while the attempts at legitimately unsettling baddies like Eligos (which worked as creature effect) and this Flaming Skeleton (which looks like ass) indicate no.Although, on another level, the clumsiness of the CGI around »

Doctor Who Season Finale Recap: Duty of Care

5 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

One aspect of Steven Moffat’s writing that doesn’t get nearly enough praise is its unpredictability. In any given season, people develop theories about what will happen. Sometimes, in the broadest sense, a few folks correctly call a thing or two ahead of time. But nobody, anywhere on the planet, in any corner of the world that this show is viewed in, predicted that this season would end with Clara and Ashildr/Me flying off into time and space in a diner-shaped Tardis. Nobody. Like so many of Moffat’s season enders, “Hell Bent” is a highly operatic and deeply emotional affair. This may be putting too fine a point on it, but it seems likely your feelings on “Hell Bent” will largely hinge on whether or not you’ve been a fan of Clara Oswald, and if her character development and story arcs over the past three seasons have resonated with you. »
