How Do You Cast a Young Han Solo? What Was the Original Episode VII Story? We Asked Star Wars Writer Lawrence Kasdan

When we caught up with Star Wars: The Force Awakens co-writer Lawrence Kasdan last week, the Oscar-nominated veteran scribe spilled a secret about one of the film's biggest villains: Captain Phasma, played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, was originally written as a man! Emboldened by Kasdan's truth-telling, we asked him to answer several other burning questions about the franchise. How do you cast a young Han Solo?Kasdan has already moved on from The Force Awakens and is busy scripting a Star Wars spinoff for summer 2018 that would follow the adventures of a young Han Solo. Rumor has it Lucasfilm and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have looked at 2,500 actors for the role, and when I asked Kasdan whether it was an impossible feat for a young actor to fill Harrison Ford's vest, he even hit me up for names. "Who would you put in it? »

Cosby Countersues 7 Accusers; Says Sexual-Assault Allegations Defamed Him

The ongoing defamation lawsuits against Bill Cosby have just become even more complicated, as the Wrap reports that Cosby himself is now countersuing seven of his accusers for making "malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against him." In a statement, Cosby's attorney Monique Pressley said that the women — Barbara Bowman, Tamara Green, Angela Leslie, Louisa Moritz, Therese Serignese, Joan Tarshis, and Linda Traitz — repeatedly lied about being abused by Cosby as part of "an effort to cause damage to Mr. Cosby’s reputation and to extract financial gains" from him. All seven women are currently suing Cosby, saying the comedian defamed them by letting his former lawyer say they were lying about being assaulted. In a response to the Wrap, their lawyer Joseph Cammarata called the countersuit "retaliatory." "You have a chorus of other women who have come out and made allegations against Mr. Cosby of sexual assault and abuse, »

Colin Quinn Was the One Who Called Tina Fey the C-Word at SNL

We all knew that the 30 Rock episode where Lutz calls Liz Lemon "the C-word" came from her own experience while she was the head writer of SNL, but we never knew who said it until now. It was former “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Quinn. “I love him so much,” Fey told Howard Stern, who, true to form, wanted her to name names. “I was trying to help him with a show that he was working on, and I think his anxiety about the writing of the show spilled over. It was very random. I was like, ‘What?!’ He left me a message and he said that.” Fey continued, “I couldn’t even guess why. Usually, if someone calls you that, you’re like, ‘I know what I did.'” But she says that they've since made up. "We've since reconnected, at the SNL 40th, actually, and we're good," she said. »

How the Writers of Independence Day 2 Got Around Will Smith Not Being in the Movie

In the real world, Will Smith will not appear in Independence Day: Resurgence because he was too expensive for Roland Emmerich. But you can't just write that in a script, so the filmmakers had to come up with an in-universe explanation for Smith's absence, which they revealed on the film's tie-in site, Warof1996.com. [Spoilers, if that's what you want to call them, will follow.] As it turns out, the reason Smith's Captain Steven Hiller will not appear in the film is because ... he's dead! According to the site, Hiller died on April 27, 2007, when the new alien-hybrid aircraft he was flying suffered an "unknown malfunction" and crashed. That's a cold write-around, Independence Day writers. Very cold. (Unless, of course, this is all a cover to make a potential Will Smith cameo in the film that much more surprising — which would be cold and calculating in a different way!) »

Margaret Cho’s New TV Show Highland Hopefully Means She’ll Get Stoned With Her Mom

It's been over 20 years since Margaret Cho starred in the first Asian-American family sitcom on network television, All-American Girl, but it looks like she might be coming back with her own show on Amazon. Deadline reports that Cho has an hour-long dramedy in the works at the streaming/selling-you-everything giant called Highland, where her character must attend court-ordered rehab and move in with her family, which now runs a pot dispensary. Unlike All-American Girl, Cho will have some creative control: She'll be executive-producing the show alongside the writer Liz Sarnoff. It's a long way from the bookstore in San Francisco, but hopefully there are still copies of Ass Master lying around. »

The 10 Best Comedy Podcasts and the 10 Best Comedy Podcast Episodes of 2015

This month Vulture will be publishing our critics’ year-end lists. Last week's lists included movies, albums, art, and video games. Today's all about comedy: the best sketches, specials, and podcasts.1. “Comedy Bang! Bang!”“Comedy Bang! Bang!” has come a long way in the six years since it started on internet radio as a spinoff of a weekly live show. Yet it remains the most consistent comedy podcast in town (and that town, considering the rest of the list, is Los Angeles). Though the format hasn’t changed much — a guest talks about their upcoming project until a person in character interrupts — the show continues to improve, as the universe of hilarious characters grows and host Scott Aukerman has developed into a comedic force unafraid to lead the show down a rabbit hole into chatter that is excruciating to some listeners and pure ecstasy to others. The Cast of Fargo on How They Found Their Voices This Season

Ahead of the finale of Fargo's excellent second season tonight, Vulture asked some of its ensemble cast members to share their favorite scenes and what inspired their characters; plus, they try their best to explain the essence of the sci-fi/gangster comedy-thriller. Ted Danson Character: Hank Larsson How would you put the Fargo tone into words? As a viewer, you sit there and watch the horrendous violence, but there’s a nervous wit kind of lurking, or an actual laugh. As a viewer, what I love is to be surprised. It makes it very scary and suspenseful, but also adds that giggle to it. What was your favorite scene to film? Hank’s kind of an old-fashioned hero, a cowboy poet who, in the face of all odds, will still stand up and do the right thing. That scene outside the Blumquist house where the Gerhardt family shows up in force, »

Bryan Cranston on Donald Trump’s Fearmongering Politics and What We Can Learn From Trumbo

The nominations have been pouring in for Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of Dalton Trumbo, Hollywood’s top screenwriter who was famously blacklisted for his political beliefs, in Trumbo. The Cinema Society hosted a celebration for Cranston Sunday night at the House of Elyx, and he wasn’t shy about drawing comparisons between his movie and the current political climate. “I think the story of Trumbo helps the public see how fearmongering can develop into a paralyzing experience for citizens,” Cranston told Vulture. “Incendiary comments that are only intended to stoke the fire aren’t helpful.” All of which isn’t dissimilar from the rhetoric of one Republican primary candidate Donald Trump. “Donald Trump is filled with inflammatory rhetoric, and I just think that he would say anything,” he said. “Look, he’s appealing to some of our most basic emotions through fear. And I think America is quite earnestly feeling that way. »

Backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball

Demi Lovato looked flawless. Fetty Wap, recovering from a recent motorcycle accident, was all smiles perched on a gold throne. Selena Gomez joined Russian Edm savant Zedd for a surprise duet. This year's Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden was a total smash onstage, but the pop all-stars were even more festive behind the scenes. In between exchanging hugs and holiday cheer, Vulture snagged a few minutes of their time backstage to snap some pics and get the intel on their preshow rituals. »

First Star Trek Beyond Trailer: Can’t Stand It, I Know Ya Planned It

Well, that's one way to make everyone forget Star Trek Into Darkness. The first trailer for the Justin Lin–directed, Simon Pegg–penned Star Trek Beyond is here, and it throws away the Inception-horn bombast of most blockbuster trailers, replacing it with the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage." That's not a very Star Trek choice, but it is a very Justin Lin one. Because of what happened last time, there's not a whole lot about Idris Elba's villain here, except the reveal that his role apparently continues the series' proud tradition of casting famous actors and then making them unrecognizable with weird makeup. »

The 10 Best Stand-Up Specials of 2015

This month Vulture will be publishing our critics’ year-end lists. Last week's lists included movies, albums, art, and video games. Today's all about comedy: the best sketches, specials, and podcasts. 1. Tig Notaro, Boyish Girl Interrupted Let me tell you about the hardest I laughed this year. Two-thirds of the way into Boyish Girl Interrupted, after finishing a story about the time, post–double mastectomy, when a Tsa agent couldn't believe she was a woman, Tig Notaro takes off her blazer. The action elicits a few "woo"s from the crowd, to which she responds, "Don't tempt me." After a knowing smirk, she removes her shirt, revealing her bare torso. Notaro pauses partly as if to say, Look what you made me do, and partly to allow the audience to cheer as they process how far she's come since her now-legendary Largo set in which she discussed her breast-cancer diagnosis, her »

Will Smith: Donald Trump May ‘Force’ Me to Run for President

Are you worried that the rise of Donald Trump's white nationalism has not yet produced a viable politics of anti-fascism? Fear no longer: If things get much worse, we can just count on Will Smith to save the day, just as he did in Independence Day, Men in Black, and Wild Wild West. "If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about walls and Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena," Smith told CBS Sunday Morning. But not for him is the slow, measured rise up the political ladder. "I gotta be the president," he says. "Come on, what else would I run for?" Smith's announcement is bad news for Kanye West, who'd hoped that he would be the only celebrity allowed to half-jokingly run for president, but it's great news for Jaden Smith, future White House philosopher-in-residence. »

Kurt Russell Expounds on Gun Control and Terrorism While Doing Hateful Eight Press, to His Publicist’s Undoubted Delight

The problem with doing a hyperviolent, gun-filled Quentin Tarantino film is that someone will eventually ask for your opinion on our hyperviolent, gun-filled reality. Hateful Eight's Kurt Russell got a chance to wax philosophical on the subject in an interview with Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells. "Well, Quentin does what he does. He’s painting a picture, writing, telling a story … like a filmmaker. But to mix and match reality with fantasy is something I don’t understand but that’s just me," Russell explained when asked if fictional, ’90s-style Tarantino violence plays differently in 2015.  Then he really gets into it, eventually declaring:  If you think gun control is going to change the terrorists’ point of view, I think you’re, like, out of your mind. I think anybody [who says that] is. I think it’s absolutely insane. The problem, the problem that we’re having right now to turn it around … you »

Tom Hiddleston has another sexy-creepy movie coming some time next year with High-Rise, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 1975 sci-fi novel by director Ben Wheatley. Yes, we know that it's a story about an ultramodern high-rise that eventually abandons all social order. But there are orgies involving Tom Hiddleston, and who is strong enough to say no to that? "Not I," said the vulture. »
