Leica's new Monochrom M camera brings the black-and-white-only concept up to date with the technological advantages of the latest M (Typ 240) and M-P cameras. The main changes are a switch from CCD to CMOS sensors, and thus the introduction of live view and a jump to 24MP, along with a much better rear screen. During the re/code Code Conference earlier this week in California, GoPro’s CEO Nick Woodman detailed a rig the company is working on that will accommodate six Hero4 cameras to record multi-angle footage for virtual reality uses. Google revealed a similar setup at its I/O 2015 conference yesterday, with the primary exception being that it holds 16 GoPro action cameras rather than six. The rig is called Array, and it was made in partnership with GoPro for Google's new Jump virtual reality platform. Click through to read more

Confirming rumors from earlier in the week, Google has announced its new Photos app - a standalone service that separates the photo component of its Google Plus app. It's available now for Google and iOS and comes with unlimited free storage of 16MP or smaller images. Read more
Photos from a Samsung presentation have emerged online, providing some insight about the company's upcoming image sensors for mobile devices. It appears Samsung is working on chips that use a RWB (red, white, blue) color filter instead of the conventional RGB pattern. This allegedly improves color fidelity and light sensitivity, allowing for smaller pixels. In turn, this could mean smaller camera modules in future smartphones. Read more
Lomography has launched its new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens, the second lens it has introduced based on the Petzval optic invented by Joseph Petzval in 1840. This newest Petzval lens features Russian glass optics, is constructed by hand, and is offered in a brass finish. The lens results in photographs with a 'swirly bokeh,' and the strength of the effect can be controlled via a Bokeh Control Ring, a feature not available in Lomography's existing 85mm Petzval. Leica has announced the forthcoming availability of its fastest ever 28mm lens for the M-system of rangefinder cameras. The Leica Summilux-M 28mm F1.4 ASPH will arrive in stores from June 22nd, and will be priced at £3975/$5950. Read more
Nikon will be offering newlywed portraits for free to couples who marry at the New York City Hall on June 4th and June 5th. Couples married at City Hall will be treated to a free portrait session with pro photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally, working out of a 20-foot 'Wedding Truck' studio. Read more

Updated Electronics giant Toshiba has announced higher capacity models of its high-speed Exceria Pro SD cards, increasing the maximum storage available to 128GB. The 16GB and 32GB Exceria Pro cards have existed for some time in European markets. Toshiba claims they achieve read speeds of 260MB/s and write speeds of 240MB/s, and the new 64GB card is said to follow suit. The highest capacity 128GB card offers a read speed of 260MB/s but a write speed of 150MB/s. Read more
When Sony launched its new Xperia Z4 flagship a few weeks back it was a Japan-only release. Today the Japanese manufacturer has announced the Xperia Z3+, which is essentially identical to the Z4 but will be available globally. It includes a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Sony Exmor sensor coupled with an F2.0 lens offering an equivalent focal length of 25mm. Read more

Leica has updated users of Apple's Photos and Aperture software regarding crashing issues when DNG files from its new Leica Monochrom (typ 246) are opened. The company says that the photo libraries of these applications will not be damaged by these crashes, and that Apple is working on an update that will resolve the issue. Read more
DxOMark Mobile has published their report on the HTC One M9, HTC's latest top-end smartphone. The new model is a touch smaller and thinner than its predecessor, the One M8, but under the hood HTC upgrades the 4MP "ultrapixel" 1/3" BSI sensor of the predecessor to a larger, higher resolution 20MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor. The F2.2 lens provides no optical image stabilization, but the M9 is the first One model capable of recording 4K video. Read our report on DxOMark's findings
We'd expect image quality from Canon's EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) to be very similar, and so far the 24.2MP APS-C DSLRs haven't surprised us in our studio tests. The real differences between these two models is in the user experience, as the T6s provides advanced touches like a top-panel LCD and rear quick control dial for easier access to exposure settings. US luxury camera bag brand Ona has announced a new black version of its Berlin ll messenger-style bag. Designed especially for the Leica M system, the Berlin was originally a limited edition model created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leica, but the Berlin ll went on general release beyond Leica stores. Previously only available in the Vintage Bourbon tan finish, the black version of the Berlin has been created, according to Ona, because so many people asked for it. Read more
Olympus USA has produced a spoof documentary that claims to highlight the problems faced by those who spend too long carrying heavy DSLR equipment. The hero of the films, Paul, suffers a condition called 'DSL-Arm,' which is characterized by a dramatic lengthening of the right arm as a result of carrying weighty camera bodies and lenses. Chinese manufacturer Oppo has today launched its new duo of flagship phones, the R7 and R7 Plus. The R7 features a 5" 1080p screen, while a 6" screen with the same resolution places the Plus model firmly into phablet territory. In the camera department both smartphones combine a 13MP sensor with an F2.2 lens but the R7 Plus chip is, like the Huawei P8, of the RGBW variant and supported by laser-AF and a dual-LED flash. Sigma UK has said that the company's latest compact camera from the Quattro line will cost £899.99 and will be available from the end of June. First announced at the CP+ show in February this year, the dp0 Quattro is the fourth of the unusually designed Quattro range and features a 14mm F4 lens. With the 23.5x15.7mm Foveon image sensor this focal length delivers a similar angle of view as a 21mm lens would on a full frame system. Read more
The Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR is a weather-sealed prime, equivalent to a 24mm field of view on Fujifiilm's X-mount cameras. With a close focus distance of just 0.15m/6in. and a fast F1.4 aperture, this lens is super versatile. In our sample testing we found it to be sharp, and to offer pleasing bokeh. Samsung has announced yet another firmware update for its flagship NX1 mirrorless camera. The company has been good about providing useful updates for the NX1, and firmware version 1.30 continues this trend. It includes numerous enhancements for still photos, video, and even Wi-Fi connectivity. Read more

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 improves on its predecessor the G6 with a newer sensor, 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder and improved autofocus - plus this year's must-have feature: 4K video. Panasonic has announced the Lumix DMC-G7, updating its mid-range mirrorless line with 4K (30p/24p) video and still recording and some slight spec upgrades across the board. It offers a built-in 2,360k-dot OLED viewfinder, fully articulated 3" 1,040k-dot LCD, improved autofocus speeds, 8 fps burst shooting (6 fps with continuous AF) as well as Wi-Fi connectivity. The Fujifilm X-T10 shares a similar relationship to the X-T1 that the OM-D E-M10 shares with its siblings - advanced features borrowed from a higher-spec model in a compact body. The X-T10 uses the X-T1's 16MP APS-C X-Trans sensor but offers slightly downgraded hardware and lacks weather-sealing. Fujifilm has formally announced the 90mm F2 R LM WR, a lens we saw in prototype at this year's CP+ show in Japan. It gives a 137mm equivalent view on Fuji's APS-C camera bodies, a popular focal length with portrait and event photographers. The lens uses 11 elements in 8 groups and offers a new Quad Linear Motor with four magnets for higher torque in autofocus. Read more

Entering photography competitions is a great way to maintain a level of drive and inspiration in your photography, as well as winning cash and photo-related equipment. We can all collect cameras and lenses, but when it comes to using them we sometimes run out of things to take pictures of. Last year, Microsoft introduced its hyperlapse algorithm for stabilizing camera footage into smooth timelapses. Now, the technology comes to life as the company has released the product as an app for Windows Phone, and as a beta app for Android devices as well as other Microsoft platforms. Read more

Despite the service's recent major update, Flickr doesn't yet offer a way for users to search content based on camera settings. Shutterdial, a website from photographer Tianhe Yang, fills that void by using the Flickr API to offer photo searches based on four criteria: subject, focal length, shutter speed and aperture. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claim to have developed a method for eliminating reflections in glass via digital processing. It is hoped that with further development the idea could see its way into digital cameras, allowing reflections to be automatically removed when they interfere with the view through a window. Toronto-based Town 30 has launched the Emissary Series camera bag on Kickstarter, where it is seeking funding for production of the photography-centric bags. The Emissary is geared specifically to photographers' needs with attachable pockets, a removable laptop compartment, a locking mechanism inspired by film-advance levers and a lens cap mount. Lily Robotics has unveiled Lily Camera, a self-flying drone designed to autonomously track and record its owner. Once it's thrown into the air it begins automatically following its target, which is anyone in possession of the accompanying GPS tracking device. Its camera captures 1080/60p HD video and 12MP stills, and the device itself is waterproof to 1 meter underwater. Read more
